How far do you REALLY hit it?

So you're in good golfing country, SS2. Enjoy it. Just hope you aren't a Rangers supporter. You could supply great stats. about last night's game. Joking, of course.

I am, for my sins, a St Mirren fan originally from Paisley. As such, I will latch onto any success by any Scottish team (i.e. Rangers or Celtic).

Rangers stats last night: I would imagine that they were pretty poor. However, the only stats that counts was in their favour !

Dead right SS2. Who cares about the stats?. Anyway, bed for me now. Golf at 9 tomorrow. Good night.

if I wait to get 25 that aren't topped, hooked or sliced it'll take a while! and that will skew the averages.
a sunday drive is, I think, out around 270+, but the 'straight' average is probably nearer 230. (if I include all the dross, like the inside hook that goes about 60 yds at 90 degrees, it's probably closer to 200 or less)
but then I hit a 5-iron 195 yards on Wednesday, slightly uphill but down wind. But that's meaningless as I doubt I'll ever do it again.

If you want to get an accurate figure, you must select 2 holes at random (running in opposite directions) before teeing off and then record your driving distance regardless of whether it's a top/slice/hook or good shot. If you only choose to record the distances of your good drives, then the resulting stat is meaningless.

Generally tease the drives out to around 260 - 270 and the trusty 7 iron 155 yards.

Once I'm under 150 yards to go generally eye ball the flag for next shot, be it a full shot or maybe cut down to take wind out of the equation.

Was given a very good bit of advice by a lady professional golfer that if your unsure of the distance of your ball when about 120 yards out pace forward 20 paces so you can then guage the distance more accurately as you've a reference for 40 paces now, i.e look at your ball then look towards the hole .

Bunker carry on the 15th at my home course is 230, and I don't worry about it. It a tough second from the trees on the right of it though!

One of my mates is fond of saying "You can't legislate for finding the middle of the club" which is where most of us tend to fall down - consistency is the problem!

Homer, how long you had SC?
Is this the first time you have used it to record actual stats per club?
Does it save the stats? (only asking because I had been thinking about a gps but want one that stores the most info)
When out on the course, do you use it for every shot excluding putting?
Has it improved your game?
Can it store rounds? :D

Vig

It doesn't store the yardages and I haven't come across any on the market that actually do that for you. It has a feature where you can mark a shot (basically measure how far you hit it) but again these aren't held anywhere on the machine

I have only used the SC on the practice ground on a downwind day so realise the distances are slightly longer than normal. I am going to repeat it once the wind is into me and at a comparable strength and then get an average. What I did was measure the yardages for each club and record them in the back of my yardage chart so I have the distances even when I can't use SC (not allowed in club competitions)

When I'm on the course I do tend to use it for the majority of shots. Fromthe tee I'm checking how far the bunkes are (especially down wind) and then dependant on where my tee shot finishes I'm looking for a distance into the green or if I have been errant, weighing up my options to carry obstacles or leave myself a good lay up

Have to say it has improved my game in as much as I know what club to take and by looking at yardages especially when the flag is at the back I get a much more realistic idea of exactly how much further it is to get back to that pin location. On some holes, it is a whole club difference for me between a flag in the centre and one at the back. Ithas helped me to club smarter and get the ball to the hole

Many thanx for the info.
I had been considering sureshot but weighing up whether to wait and see if something smaller comes on the market. I do think it will be a valuable tool if only to record accurate yardages instead of relying on my fading eyesight.

I wish you success in it's use. Keep the forum posted of your progress please.

when i got fit for my cobra spped pro i was getting 275 carry i tamed up a bit now unless i go on the launch monitor its about 240/250 carry

measured todays drives using google earth on all 12 driving holes:
worst: 180
best: 243 (with three at 242)
average: 221

and on the one hole I used a 4-iron: 202
