I've recently started walking/carrying for some of my rounds with a lightweight carry bag & while they might all fit in I don't really want to stuff all the cart bag clubs in and lug that weight around for 12km so i'm trying to decide which clubs to drop/include for my most suitable half set

Last week I had Driver, 5W, 6I, 8I, PW, GW & putter plus my 'rock' club (scrap 5H, used for getting ball back into play from rocky/stone lies) so its 8 clubs which is the max I want to carry
Next time I'll drop both Driver & 5W and pop in the 3W to see if it can substitute for the two long clubs

Pretty happy with the short clubs, didn't miss the 56° at all, would've kinda liked the 9I in, but just for one shot as it turned out so not a big issue
Don't really want the rock club in but its necessary when the course is built over lava rock and any lie beyond first cut could have stones under it

How do others choose their set up when using a half set?

Driver, whichever is the longest iron I'm striking well, 7i for par 3s, 9i, 50°, 56°, old putter (no headcover).

It's not really half as I went with 9 clubs through winter, but that's mainly because I kept an extra wedge in because I play at a short course with slopey greens.

I tend to just take out the alternate ones through most of the bag, so:
Driver, 5 wood
7 wood, 23° hybrid
27° hybrid, 7 iron
8 iron, 9 iron
PW, 46°
50°, 56°, 60°, putter.

As I say, could have taken out either the 56 or 60 but I use them for different things at my course so kept them. So if I'm in between clubs (i.e. needing one I left at home) I just go to the longer one and grip down an inch or two.

I used to take one half set on one round and another half set on the next round. I quickly learnt what clubs are really needed.

I would only take one wedge either time as I have the experience to open and close a 52 wedge to most lofts (ps I would not count the PW in a modern set as a wedge).

i often walk on our shorter course with a little pencil bag. For my irons i usually use an older set of small blades rather than my proper clubs to help practice ball striking.
I usually take a "tee club" - either a 3W, 2i or Hybrid
A mid Iron (6/7)
A short iron (8/9)
A wedge (P/G)
A specialist wedge (usually 54, maybe 58)
Putter (old one)

I bought a half set last summer for £10.
Prosimmon bag, Prosimmon 5-wood, Mizuno Cimarron Blades 4, 6, 8, PW and a Ben Sayers Opel Line 3 putter.

I've complimented those this year with a St Andrews driver (99p) and an Adams Golf (Tom Watson) SW (£1)

My £11.99 (price includes bag) half set...

Just the job for a round at Painswick, maybe.

The rare occasions we go to carry only I take...
4w
4h
6i
8i
PW(46)
SW(54)
Putter

Or

Driver
3h
6i
8i
PW
SW
Putter

Sometimes I'll take the 9 and gap wedge as well to give me the options

If I had to whittle it down to 7 clubs I'd go for

Driver
5 hybrid
7 iron
9 iron
50 degree
56 degree
Putter

I think that would get me through most situations

If I was doing this I’d take out all the clubs I hit confidently and play these rounds as relationship rebuilders.

My 4i went in last week as a had a slot, subsequently didn’t use hybrids the complete round after some pretty solid 5i/4i’s

When I started a junior I could only afford a half set with my post office savings. I went 3W, 5W, 4, 6, 6, PW and SW

If I was going to carry a half set (unlikey) I'd go with that if only for nostalgic reasons

I bet typo. 8.

That made me smile from a memory.

I had a mate who was an occasional golfer who played with an old second hand set he bought. He was boasting how far he could hit a SW until I pointed out to him it was an 8 iron. It was so worn out that the 8 had become an S.

I still laugh remembering one of my mates coming up miles short of a green, looking at the club confusingly and realising he'd pulled the 9 instead of the 6. Not sure how he didn't notice the length difference.
