How aggressive are you during a round?

exactly, its the final score that counts.

there is plenty of time try "stupid shots" when out practising. I do this all the time when I am on my own.

when its comp time, its time to switch on and shoot a score. this means knowing when to attack and when to back off. even pros do this. if you don't do this and wonder why you have a high handicap then its time to reassess your course strategy.

there are very few sports where going gung ho at things work.

I tend to have a plan A on every hole to try and make par. Depending on the tee shot I might need a plan B but the idea is to make no more than bogey. I am probably too conservative although it has seen my in good stead at place like FoA. In a roll up on a Saturday I am a lot more adventurous especially if I've got off to a bad start. I try and treat these as practice rounds and play different shots

Not physically. *cough*

I mean, how do you find yourself playing the game?

Personally, I'm far too aggressive. Will always try to shoot for the pin.
If out of position, will try miracle shots. The LAST option is always safety, loathe it.

The only time I'm less than aggressive, is on the putting green. This annoys me.

That sounds like a mirror image of my game. I always go for it full commitment. Even if its a tight game. Last week i was on the 18th par 5, two points up all i had to do is play percentage golf but i just could not bring myself to do it. I smashed a drive over tree line and then attacked the green with a 3 wood and it can off i managed to birdie the hole almost eagles it but i always try this and i would say 7 time out of 10 i do not score on the hole but i really do not care i love doing a super golf shoot and thats why i play it.

I'm starting to try and play less aggressive but that doesn't mean golf has to be dull. For me overly aggressive golf can be verging on depressing as there's only so long you can keep hacking out sideways and hoping the next Hollywood 4iron from 195yds over water to a tight pin can be seen as the way to keep a score together.

Im learning that percentage golf with aggressive short iron/wedge play suits me well, im only average length of the tee but can hit 2/3 of our course Par5's in 2 but by going for those 2nd shots i leave myself open to either tough lies if i miss the green or worse if i miss hit. So I'd rather lay up short in 2 and attack the flag from the fairway with a wedge. After all my scorecard wont show if its a 2 putt birdie or a wedge + 1 putt.

In comps my strategy now is take the best club to keep me in play from the tee and then with any club that's 7iron or longer aim for the centre of the green, if its 8iron or shorter im going at the flag. So still play some aggressive shots when requires but with a lower % risk.

The only thing seen at end of the round is the score and if you shoot 72 people will say well done, if i shoot 93 but hit a Hollywood shot from heaven once no-ones going to bat an eye lid.

I like that there's a strategy for everyone depending upon what they want from the shot and their strengths. I've learned over time that having the discipline to take the conservative route pays dividends for me at least. Shouldn't think this is boring.

I do think some folks games lend themselves to the miracle recovery shots, i'm a short hitter so long carries over trouble and hacking out of deep rough is even harder. The longer hitters must have a greater probability of pulling it off?
