How aggressive are you during a round?

I used to be all about the hollywood shots, even if there was a 1 in 100 chance of it coming off, but lately I seem to have mellowed and find myself laying up, not taking the driver out by default and aiming for the centre of a green instead of the pin every time.... The frustrating thing is when the "safe" shots end up hooked/sliced and you think what was the point!

HAHA I know exactly how you feel...

If I can get at the pin with minimal risk, I'll always try and knock it close.

There are some pins at our place though you just don't mess with as it will bring a high number into play. On these holes it's middle of green.

I play each green and pin position on its own merits.

You need to really believe that the 'safe' shot is the 'best' shot. If you don't - it can - and often will - go wrong. I start from the position of asking myself what the best shot for me is. And following TAs maxim of 'play the shot you know you can play well' that will mostly but not always turn out to be a 'safe' or 'conservative' shot.

From an 8 iron down, I'm aiming at the hole.

More conservative off the tee. I've started not just reaching for the driver if a 3 wood or hybrid will leave me a shortish to mid iron for my 2nd shot.

Still trying to talk myself out of getting the 3 wood out for my 2nd shots on our 2 Par 5 holes. :D

I'm getting better in certain situations...e.g. if I've got 210(ish) into a green I've learnt now to lay up rather than trying to hit my 3 hybrid/3wood into the green.

BUT..... I'm too aggressive on attacking pins, I really should aim for the heart of the green more.

We have small greens. Pro's advice is that if you are in the middle of the green you will never have a long putt. So I tend to go for the middle of the green rather than the flag.

Im probably not aggresive enough. Consitently safe...

Ive got myself in a position where i can score mid 30 points off my full HC every time I play. (see how tonight goes now Ive said that)

When I played of 3/4 HC recently I upped my GIR atempts and scored 32 points.

I know I can hit better and longer shots I just need confidence to atempt it more often...

I hit the ball as far down the fairway as possible, the intent is to simply sink the 2nd shot. I want to beat every hole, sometimes it works other times it don't welcome to golf.
I swing within myself but play aggressive shots. If you don't you won't get better, you need to keep challenging yourself.

I am playing this game for fun, not for a living. I want to be driving home thinking about the awesome shot I hit on 13, that no one else could have hit. Yes, the score is important, but not if I bore myself stupid trying to get it.

Disagree. I will never get better if I keep try things that have a high risk quotient as the vast majority of times I'll mess up. I'll get better by by getting myself into the position where I am comfortable and confident that I can execute a particular shot pretty well - most of the time. When I get to that point I can start to push the boundary of my comfort zone. That means that I might look to be playing an aggressive shot when in fact I will actually be playing a shot within or just over the boundary of my comfort zone - I don't stray far from my comfort zone. I think rather than aggressive/conservative it's better to consider in/out comfort zone - the former is absolute - the latter is relative.

I'll adopt an unequivocally boring approach to the long game (i can lay up from anywhere) but on or around the greens just go for everything.

Do like the sentiment about venturing out of the comfort zone; not sure i would plan this without having practiced the shot first though at the range... See, dull all the way.

Exactly the way I play the game. I go for everything and if it doesn't pay off then I aint going to lose any sleep on it. I know IN MY MIND I can hit it through the 3ft gap between the trees every time. If I bailed out and chipped it sidewards then how will I ever know !

Problem I have is I am just as likely to mess up my lay up or approach shot so why not go for it and if it doesn't come off still may have a shot at the green !!

I kno I need to play more 'safely' to improve my scores but can't seem to convince myself when I am on the course .... Played 9 yesterday 2 trebles and a double but still walked off 11 over which is net +1...... Easy to see where the shots are but I am struggling to address them!!!

Fingers crossed for medal on say !!!!
