Doesn't your partner smell the alcohol on you?

Seriously, if you're on the wind up this is very distasteful. Drinking and driving is abhorrent. If your pals can't drink with a mate who wants lemonade or a coffee I suggest you get new pals.

This came up on another post about whether clubhouses should be more like cafes than bars now and it is something that I agree with in the focus of the products that it sells if not appearance. To a certain extent, the clubhouse bar is an annocronism left behind from the pre drink driving days and carrying on for those decades where people simply did not care. At least when I played rugby there was a constant procession of people walking back to the club on the walk of shame to collect their cars. Never seen a car left overnight at the golf club.

I can probably count on one hand the number of people that I knew walked to my old club, the car park was always full, bar had plenty of people drinking but, at the end of the day, the car park was always empty. The club had a mix of those who just did not care and those who still thought that 2 pints of anything (or a glass of wine even if it was basically a bucket of red) was OK before driving (try pointing out that one pint of many beers these days is too much).

I dont drink at all if I have the car and so it is lime and soda for me or a coffee and that does grate occasionally when every week you are buying a £20 round and £1.50 of it is your drink but still, that is life. How did we make it more fair, played for a fiver a head, winner buys the round and pockets the change.

Personally, I wish clubs would do much more in the way of alcohol alernatives. Would rather spend that £4.00 that I would spend on a beer on a decent flavoured coffee or similar.

There's a lot of decent non-alcoholic drinks available now. On a Friday evening watching the sport I usually have a bottle of non-alcoholic beer. So it's available out there.

Totally agree, plenty of decent options around but you would not know it at some clubs. I have seen pages of debate at various levels about what beers should be in the clubhouse but not once seen a mention of the non alcholic options.

It is simply about self discipline and common sense.

Most people will be over the limit with 2 pints of say 3.5 percent beer in England and Wales and over the limit with just over half a pint in Scotland.

So you have to say to your self what is more important a second pint or your driving licence.

I as once breathalysed after an accident 3 hours after drinking two pints with a meal and it was positive but the cop let me off as the accident was not my fault. Learnt my lesson.

For many years now for me it has been a cup of coffee when I first get in and only one pint, luckily for me the majority of guys I play with now do the same although there are a few hardened drinkers who drink well over the top.

Part of the issue is that too many still go by the 2 pint rule which, if it ever worked, was based on lower strength beer. Most lagers and ciders are upwards of 5% now and even bitters are coming in at 4% and above.

I joined a club and have played the majority of my golf since just before Covid. So I’ve ‘grown-up’ with not having a drink after a round as last year the clubhouse was shut for most of the time. Then, this year, restrictions on when it was open and who could drink there.

To be honest, after spending 3 1/2 hours with someone talking quite often / intermittently during the round, I don’t really want to stay and spend another 30 mins to an hour having a drink or more. I’ve other things / commitments to do with my weekend — but each to their own

It fascinates me that most club houses don't attempt to cater to a wider market than just golfers and serve a wider variety of food and drinks.

The 3 nearest clubs to me have lovely clubhouses with large function rooms alongside the bar area and member's lounge. They sit empty for 5/6 days of the week when they could be lovely cafes in a great setting. If that was the case, if be far more likely to stay after the round.

I mainly play on weekday afternoons or later in at the weekend. Most times, the clubhouse has 4 or 5 people in at most and they are usually having a pint. I'll occasionally have a pint if I'm at the local course as it's less than a 5 minute drive but most of the time it's straight home.

This is the reason I don’t leave my very local course even though there is a lot better tracks a bit more of a drive away
I love a few pints after golf with fellow members can get a taxi for 8 quid or usually get someone drop me off
Regarding my lady I just tell her the truth as she knows I’ve had a few beers by just looking at me or when I trip over the front step

Fivers in before teeing off. Winner takes all but has to buy the first round. Have one beer, go home. No pressure to get your round in or wait until you've drunk enough to compensate you for buying a round.
Most guys at my place only hang around for one or two drinks. The rounds even out over the weeks, months and years. Everyone always thinks they buy more than they drink. Everyone knows people who always seem to avoid getting a round in. There will always be people who think you fall into the latter category when you would swear you're in the former.
It's the price of social drinking.

I find I'm driving to golf 99% of the time so never drink. Odd occasion I have had a few is when it's a jolly away and we are car sharing, or I've made arrangements to stay over somewhere. I'm used to not drinking and driving tbh, a lot of guys I play with live local in Nairn and either get partners to collect them or walk home and leave clubs in the car to be collected next day.

if I do want a pint now, it tends to be before I go on the course rather than after.

So you do drink and drive then! I once had a pint before a round, I felt fine walking to the tee but when it came to swinging the driver I could definitely feel a lack of coordination (more than normal :p). Golf is hard enough without alcohol.

Beers after golf is the best part of the day. I couldn't be a car park golfer but I don't look down on those who choose to be.

As for remembering who bought the last round, Jesus christ haven't you all got better things to do. It's only a beer/soft drink.

It's the serial slow shoe shufflers that get folks attention, always last to the bar, and prone to leaving before it's their round, or even offering. Like I said above, I've even run into guys at opens where I know I'm not going to be seeing a drink off them, and sure enough.....

Who actually cares? Life's too short for that rubbish

I don't even drink and don't care what people buy I'll offer them a drink and they return the favour another time

Must say our club way is better you just drink and settle at end

Can split or all on one

Driving home from golf last year I went into the back of someone doing 5 mph at a junction. It bogged me off, I needed a new bumper. I had drunk 1 pint. I don’t think in any way shape or form the pint affected what happened but I was glad I was not over the limit. That was a wake up call.
For me, when Golf returned after Covid I started drinking a cuppa tea and a slice of cake after a round. The club now has Ghost ship 0%.. it is gorgeous.
I never feel under pressure to have a drink and I am happy to socialise without the need to have a few.
