Haotong Li penalty

Whilst it seems harsh, the rule change does cover it fairly well....

New Rule: Under Rule 10.2b(4):
  • The previous prohibition is extended so that, once the player begins taking a stance for the stroke, and until the stroke is made, the player’s caddie must not deliberately stand on or close to an extension of the line of play behind the ball for any reason.
  • There is no penalty if the caddie accidentally stands on or close to an extension of the line of play behind the ball, rather than in trying to help in lining up.
The first paragraph is clear, especially the "for any reason" part.
But then they confuse, contradict even, that by using language that takes away the"for........" bit and infer that for there to be a penalty the caddie must be trying to help in lining up .
IMO, that is one terrible bit of rule writing.
Either,
A.The latter paragraph should end after "behind the ball". or
B. "for any reason" of the first paragraph should be omitted.

I don't think so but it's irrelevant now.
All the players and caddies now know where they stand or shouldn't in this case.
If someone gets penalised in the future, it's their own fault.

I'm sure Li quite happily 'paid' his 100k to teach his fellow players the rule (y)(y)

Here’s one then. I was watching an international feed of the competition here in Australia. On the 10 hole of the final round , it was mentioned that someone had timed Bryson for each shot taken to get to the green, he was averaging at 1 minute and 10 seconds. It’s the inconsistency of applying the rules that is frustrating us all I believe

That's not a rules infrimgment though is it.

He was 1min 45 for one putt, the BBC golf correspondent started timing him. Don't think he was put on the clock though :(.

The statement from Keith Pelley regarding this incident was pretty fierce. His approach reflects what many followers and players think and as head honcho he has influence. It will be interesting to see this develop.

I'm sure I read something from someone in authority that if Li had moved away from "stance" and then retaken it there wouldn't have been a penalty...
Well that seems to be wrong...

Imagine playing someone a video of Koepka’s rock being lifted and McCarthy’s ‘lining up’ and asking them which of these isn’t allowed.

It does on the putting green not elsewhere

Quality!, the caddie had no reason to be there (other than checking his players alignment which is a breach of the rules)

So it then means that there was no way what so ever he could’ve escaped the penalty after his caddie stood behind him? That is nothing but ridiculous.

Love to know the reasoning behind that.....
Maybe they wanted to simplify the rules but then decided some were too simple and needed to be made less understandable.

"When taking his stance".....
I believe those are the words or similar.
The player takes several practice swings whilst not addressing the ball - he's clearly not trying to hit it.
Caddy moves away
Player steps out of his practice stance to check line
Takes his stance and hits.

The caddy was not behind the player when the stance for the shot was taken.

Iirc that's not what the rule is for aligning your player on the fairway
