Haotong Li penalty

For the practice swing yes, not for ''the stroke''

That's starting to split hairs and this was apparently deemed over the line for that shot

It's easy, don't let your caddie line you up full stop

That's what the rule intended to eliminate
That's what players are pushing boundaries on

Nope, read/discuss the line is fine
Line up anywhere on the course is not

On the green:

Player sets up and make a practice stroke or two next to ball with caddie behind. Caddie walks away, player takes a few steps back, goes back and make his stroke. No penalty.

What’s the difference in this scenario besides it being on the green that makes it legal in your opinion?

nike marketing should be rushing to the printers as we speak.

Polos with this printed on the back :caddy if you can read this, piss off!

Would sell like hot cakes at the waste management open.

So here's the joke....
Aligning your player on the green is allowed as long as your player steps away and retakes his stance.
Li would have avoided a penalty if he'd taken a step backwards and then stepped into the same position.
This guy gets a penalty for having practice swings with his caddy behind him. He then backs out, retakes his stance and hits.

I'm staying out of this now as I know the Rulies will say that it's all been applied correctly.
I think it stinks, I think it's badly worded and leaves too many grey areas.

Only difference is one is permitted under the rules (wrongly imo) and the other isn't

I agree the wording isn't the best... But a pro would know

Very poor from the ruling bodies imo this is taking it to far.

Let's not fall into the trap of looking for ways the pros can circumnavigate the intention of the rule.

We don't want players to be aided with their alignment by the caddie or anything else on the tee, fairway or green

Thanks, I know the rule.
But your answer here, with you stating that you believe it’s wrong the same scenario is being treated differently depending if on/off the green was the only thing that I’ve tried to get at since my first post.

I understand that, but if he did exactly the same on the putting green it wouldn't be a penalty.

If I’m honest it’s a new rule which was going to have teething problems especially where it’s down to interpretation- there was always going to be some early incidents where the understanding is unsure about it all but again by the letter of the law that caddy could have easily be helping him with his shot alignment and the player took his stance.

I totally agree, but I think the rule should be consistent on the tee, fairway and green.

Yeah I don't think they should have the opportunity to back off on the green
Is that the same as your thoughts?

When the player took his stance for the stroke the caddie wasn't near him.

Now we’re at least discussing same thing! :D

To be honest, I don’t have too many thoughts around it. Only thing is as already said previously on here: apply the rule in the same way all over the course at least so it makes sense.
Then you can have the other debate of the rule on alignment itself and if it should be considered when players leave their stance and set up again without caddie behind them.

Cool ;)

I've never seen anyone endorse the caddie lining up they player in years gone by so I guess the majority feel the same way

Move it, and stop chancing your arm! :p

Maybe as the green is potentially quite a small area, with several people standing around, the possibly of accidentally breaching it is much higher, so they are given a chance to rectify it.? That would seem fair to me.
