Golf Random Irritations

Surely the post work ko depends on your job? Being field based for the for all of may (up until 17th) I got home on time once, this is either by road closures/works, traffic.. etc etc etc.

I’ve learned that trying to enter both doubles and singles at the same time is a ball ache and rarely works. Doubles in the winter as less people on holidays etc, singles in the summer as they time allows more flexibility

. @Orichops, if you can’t slot in post work games I’d suggesting making a choice of either or as clearly both doesn’t work.

Exactly Baz - its all about compromise and judging your situation

I only enter the two single KOs because in the doubles there are plenty that can only play midweek early -where as with singles there will always be a compromise

People can’t just dismiss playing during the week “because they have a job” - there are people with Jobs that work shifts , field work , weekends - there are just as many jobs that are no longer 9-5 mon to Fri

Compromise is always the key and it always a royal pain when it comes to arranging them

Your initial post(s) gave the impression there wasn’t any/much give from your side. I for once agreed (to a degree) saying that it’s a ball ache trying to compete in both k/o’s if after work games are not available.

And the worst is doubles, especially if you have a varied membership base. We’ve had to play one on an away trip and also allow one to be played as a singles as there was always one of us away and it was bad form to force either team to play it as a 2vs1. The fairest way was both players off 18 played it effectively as a scratch singles.

Drove 30 miles to Sherborne for an away team scratch match. Course was closed due to heavy rain and flooded greens. We waited for about 1 hour but the match had to be abandoned. Drove the 30 miles back to my home course and played a few holes in the sunshine. 🤷‍♂️

Out of our group of 16 usual players only 4 went out and two gave up after 6 holes.

I avoid matchplay comps at our club now. We entered the Daily Hatemail foursomes a couple of years ago. Their rules stipulate that the home team must offer several dates to include weekend and weekdays as an option for the opposition. That seems sensible for any club comp too really. You should expect to be flexible, whether you're working or retired.

Still in 4 knockouts and once again it’s the retired folks in two of them who are hard to pin down.

One is away for most of the month basically giving us a few days to fit the match in.

The other has sent a list of days and times with demands of when the games must be finished by. Between now and the end of June there are two weekend days they can play 🤨

Played in a scramble event yesterday. Four hours and forty eight minutes it took us to get round. Thankfully we finished before the rain started. The front 9 was two hours and forty minutes.

On the 8th there were 3 groups, the lead group were so slow, every shot required a team meeting where they walked to multiple balls deciding which to hit. And this is one of the main reasons I don’t like scrambles.
Judging by where they were playing from they couldn’t have been scoring particularly well. I don’t know if someone had a word on the 9th and they got a move on or they left, but after the turn pace improved and we never saw them again.

We won the lowest gross prize.

I couldn't enter any of the seniors knockouts as they now stipulate they have to be played weekdays only. Hardly fair when you hit 55 and are still working and most of those that are retired refuse to play in the late afternoon as "they always play in the mornings". I'm not taking annual leave for it

You’re right, that isn’t fair for the club to say they have to be played on weekdays.

The oldies do have the time to play although it is not on their side....

They often also get a discount as older folk....

This getting old malarkey might just have some upsides.

A lot of older people mind the grandkids.
So don’t just assume they have loads of time!

At my old club we had a rule for all knockouts.
If no date could be agreed the match will take place on the final day ( sunday) at 11 am if one side fails to turn up your out.
If both sides don’t turn up to claim the game or play your both out.
If you can’t agree don’t put your name down.
Worked very well.

I do like that one. I stated last year that I would not play in any more knockouts because of the issue with arranging dates. I agreed to play in one this year and almost instantly regretted it when in the first round arguments arose over availability.

We were knocked out, I'm not bothered, and that really was the last.

Not withstanding any of that, I do like your old club's solution.

Sounds good in theory, but then you'll get the awkward so and so's who won't agree a date and then hope for a a walkover on the final day.

Club without any drawn events. Everyone plays with the same people every week at about the same time.

Getting a bit boring.
Yep....this is one of the things I don't like about my current club. Same people etc for all comps.....sorry, but that just doesn't hack it. If you think there aren't people breaking the rules because they are playing with the same ol' friends....you are living in nana land. I guess they used to draw for the main comps.....medals and majors etc....but then had a vote and they voted to play with their buddies.

We are only drawn for Club Championship, other than that it is fastest finger first when booking for other comps, Club is over 110yrs old and it’s never been a problem.

Golf is a hobby and if I want to enjoy it then I’ll choose who’s company I wish to keep.

Some people only get to play once a week and why should they risk being stuck with some boring or miserable or someone they dislike for 4-6 hours?

Families play together!

Never experienced anyone cheating and I’m sure if any of my mates or I tried it, it would be the last time we played together.

If you’ve got cheating going on in your place I’d suggest a letter to the committee.
