Golf club COMMITTEES - are they really worth having any more?

I really don't see a need for them. Shouldn't we have a better system nowadays seeing that there's better communication in the world... like (perhaps) balloting the members instead of letting 20 grumps decide?

Thoughts?

Golf clubs could not operate without committtees. Who would be held responsible for the everyday running of the club, the finances, the course, the hiring and firing, the membership? I could go on, but I would expect any club without a cttee wouldn't last.

Every decision would take forever. How do you get the questions to ask, who comes up with them?

not sure why you use the 'grumps' word, surely that's the fault of the membership if they cant be bothered to join in themselves they have no excuse to berate the committee memberships for doing it.

My thoughts are what are you talking about 'letting 20 grumps decide'??

Explain further if you don't mind.

As one of the "twenty grumps" at my club,[editted]

Feel free to join a club where there is no committee. You will have no competitions, no administration of handicaps (so you will be unable to enter any events elsewhere), no social events, no junior development. Need I go on?

You may be unhappy with some of the decisions made by your committee, but unless you are prepared to give up hours of your time to help run your own club, there really is only one suggestion I can make.

Keep it zipped.

Steady on....Justone stated last week that he reckoned he could run his club himself with ease.

Would love to see it,I really would.I stated then and I will state it again, running clubs especially nowadays is tough work, really, really tough work and it is only getting tougher.

So where would you find an admin mgr, finance mgr, facilities mgr, an events mgr + staff for less than £10k? Think about what it takes to run such a diverse, multi-million pound, business. Imagine what it would cost to find managers with that level of understanding and experience + commitment.

Don't make the mistake of assuming just because they're volunteers they haven't got a clue.

TBH your question is at best naive... but if its a case of having a pop because there's been decisions made you don't like, get off your ar5e and find out if you've got what it takes to do the job.

I was at our AGM last night and from the figures that were released, considering the times we are in they have done real sterling work and should be heartily congratulated. To try and do it without the various committees would be pretty much impossible IMO and although (sometimes) the members of the committees can be pompous it must be up to the members to make the changes?

For what it's worth... the best club in the area is East Sussex National and they don't have a committee. I'm sure those on a committee will feel like I'm stepping on their toes, I'm not, but if you step aside and ask if you are really necessary...are you?

what are their fees and how many staff do they have (pay) instead of a committee?

Trouble is James that you would end up with 620 grumps!

You can't compare the two, ESN has 2 tour standard courses, saunas, steam room, free range balls, fantastic practice area, lots of drawn comps, free club cleaning, free trolleys, car to tee bag service.... it costs £400 more p/a
