Flag in / flag out debate

I try to avoid playing with people who leave the flag in.....because it is slow...first guy putts with flag out then you put it back in for the next and so on.....for 18 holes it just frustrates me, specially when they will not putt out of turn to quicken things up.
That just sounds like slow golfers....plenty of them around. If I'm playing in a threesome (as an example) in a rollup, occasionally I might play with 2 guys who like the flag out and I like it in until I get within 8 feet or so. If I start putting I just let them know that I will keep putting until I'm done so we don't have to put the flag in....and then out....and then in etc. Common sense I would think.

So. Coming back to my original observation, the pros now days seem to prefer the flag out (or attended).

To quote another long running thread - drive for show, putt for dough. At last they have seen sense and come back to my way of thinking
The pro's have several advantages over me....
1. They putt more aggressively. They don't seem to mind going past the hole a few feet, they are confident they can hit the fairly short putt coming back. I'm NOT so confident about hitting putts several feet back so I tend to try to hit my putts no more than a foot past the hole. Aggressive faster putts will have a higher chance of bouncing out.
2. I think it is also just what you are used to. Most people keep doing what they have been doing in the past because of habit. I'm not normal.....I'm always tinkering/changing everything.
3. The pro's also get nice painted holes that make the hole a lot more visible.

Just change the rules of golf to say that the flag stays where it is; and have a screw fitting for it into the hole to make damn sure it stays there and nobody even thinks about taking it out.
This is definitely the fastest possible option for pace of play, and makes the debate over what is better irrelevant  .
Pros don't like it? Tough. It's actually much better for on-course (and TV) spectators too, as from many angles it's very hard to see where the hole is when they are putting; and spectators are the ones ultimately paying their wages...

Spot on. Those people who don't touch the flag, just get on with putting the ball take much longer than those who want the flag removing. It's so selfish of people to leave the flag exactly where it started, in the hole 🙄

Drive for show putt for dough, it's just a saying that has no real usefulness.

Don’t like the flag in with any point , all the research seen shows it’s got more chance of going in with it out , not sure why someone would want to putt with the hole size reduced

Do prefer the heavy flags but we moved to the thin ones
I was good with the heavy ones. Liked how they were solid and unbending in wind. But typically for my place, some members decided that the club didn’t mean to buy the heavy ones but got them sent by mistake and decided to stick with them. And oh how they moaned when a putt hit way too hard bounced out off one.

As @Mandofred On the 1st green I ask my playing group In or Out. We all then know, and on that and subsequent holes if order of putting doesn’t matter Inners will often putt first and putt out before Outers start. How we actually do it can vary slightly, but generally there is little or no In-Out hokey-kokey, and what there is makes no difference to pace of play.

But what happens when you play with people who will only putt in turn or if they are going to stand on your line ?

Yeah...I kind of like that idea. Although the people who just do not like the flag in still won't like it. Although to make a few more people happy....screw those flags in but make the hole a smidgeon bigger.....although even then when someone who likes the flag out hits the flag at 100mph and it bounces out will still insist it would have gone in without the flag.
But what happens when you play with people who will only putt in turn or if they are going to stand on your line ?
Then you suck it up and do the in and out routine. Compromise.....it's not hard to do.

Like I said, I try to avoid those people, been playing the game for over 50 years and you always had to have the flag out when putting on the green, so why should I change now ?

I like making the hole bigger.....screw with tradition :ROFLMAO:

You avoid people who want to flag in ?! 😂

And you don’t have to change

It’s very simple that most adults can figure it out

If you want the flag in - have it in

If you want the flag out - have it out 🤷‍♂️

Do you ever make changes to your game? I do all the time. Change my backswing.....change my hand grip position.....more/less hand action....etc etc. I try different things out to see what works better. Maybe if you gave it a serious try you "might" putt better with it in......maybe.....maybe not. Just because you have been doing something for 50 years doesn't mean it's the best way.

I say to myself “fair enough…no big deal”.

Obviously standing on another’s line is to be avoided - though tbh with firm greens and given we are able to tap down spike marks etc…I’m not convinced it makes a lot of difference to most players putts - but it remains 100% etiquette to be observed. As @Arthur Wedge says…let common sense prevail.
