Fighting Talk From Captain Old Fart

Sounds perfect, I plan to leave Ashford at about 9.45 and take a slow drive along the Hawkhurst route. A 2 hour lay in this morning .... mmmm it's almost like retirement!

And the outcome was?

I'm going with 27pts for Smiffy, (if stableford was included)..... or lose his 4BBB AND lose his individual game against PNWokingham.

I reckon he'll have had better days....

Pieman I've penciled in for 32pts

The slippery old dog did me up the last to win by 1 for the singles and halve the match - my 7 didn't cut it!! Started with a birdie and was up 2 or 3 through till 11 when I hit the wrong ball - Chris's provisionall for my second - then proceded to hit my proper through the green in 2 for what would have been an easy par/decent birdie chance which would have duffed Smiffy who hit his second backwards off a tree - a 2 shot swing - down to 2 up not 4! A few holes later, Smiffy then skillfully bounced his drive off the trees on the left of a par 4 back intp the fairway a long way back - laid up short and did a great up on down from a tricky spot to make par and a half. Next mistake from me - going to tap in a 2 footer on 16 for a half and mising it!!! Arrrgggghhhh. I then played like a knob and tried to take on the green uphill 240 yards into the wind up the last and spudded it 20 yards. Crap course management.

Thanks to Rob for organising the day - much appreciated. Great fun day with Paul, Rob and Chris on a lovely course in the sun. Had a little slip down a bomb crater on the 6th and am still pulling out splinters from my arm and hands.

Crowborough is a lovely track - but be warned it is tricky and quirky - feels like an illigimitimate love child of Beau Desert and the Addington. Looking forward to a revisit and some better course management

Oh no he will have a bit of confidence for when we play week Sunday. Mind you it doesn't sound like he had to play well to beat you Paul. Glad you didn't mention the word that fills me with fear about a golf course, 'tight' !! I can cope with quirky and tricky.;) Looks like the momentum is with the old farts for Woodhall.:whoo:

The old boys were not about to be shafted by the young wippersnappers in the main match. We allowed the 2 Pauls to edge ahead with just a few holes to go and then just reeled them in for a share of the spoils at the end.

Crowborough is a lovely place, a lot of good driving opportunities it was just a shame that the greens still were showing the signs of last weeks verti draining. Everyone played a mixture of good, bad and indifferent shots but I thought that the standard was generally pretty reasonable. If you get the chance to play with Smiffy, Pieman or PN Wokingham, grab the chance, they are really good guys to spend an afternoon with and I didn't hear my partner Smiffy use the word "knob" at all, not even on the three occasions that PN went arse over tit and finished up looking like he had just played in a rugby match!

I have to say that the Chancellor of the Exchequer did more today, than the 2 Pauls, for the elderly, who were trying to rake an extra fiver into their coffers by asking us olden's to hole out the odd, clear, gimee putt but the old geezers are made of sterner stuff and stood firm and banged em in.

So honours in the team game were even and with Smiffy grinning like a Cheshire Cat after tucking up PN Wokingham in their singles match at least he made some money from the bets!

Cheers for inviting us Rob!

Well played Chris and Smiffy.... a halved match and a win for Smiffy.... nice!

And you had perfect weather for it too.

How was it on the hips Chris?

Great day in great company. Nice to meet Chris for the first time, who was driving fantastically well yesterday. Always nice to play with the two Pauls. Apologies about the greens lads, they were not good were they? The course as a whole definitely needs another month or so to be anywhere near it's best.
I didn't play particularly well, especially on the front 9. Had been hitting my new driver pretty well on the last two outings but just couldn't get it going yesterday. Was looking forward to the game so much I guess I had just worked myself up a bit and was trying just a tad too hard, which never works does it.
Picked it up a little on the back 9 and played the last 5 holes reasonably well, taking what would have been 12 points off of them (had we been playing Stableford) which obviously helped.
All square going up the last and I having played with Paul (PN-Wokingham) a number of times I just knew he would have to have a go at getting on the 18th in two. It would have been a career best shot from where he was to have made it, but have a go he did. I had to hide my smiles when he topped it about 15 yards! It helped further when he knobbed his next straight into a fairway bunker!
I knew I couldn't get home from where I was so decided to play it as a par 5, and just knocked a nice 3 wood up the middle to leave myself a reasonably straightforward chip and two putt for the win. I'll take a 5 up the last at Crowborough any day of the week, one of the toughest par 4 closing holes you'll play anywhere.
I'd said to Pieman on the 18th tee that it would be good if I could win the last hole two halve our fourball match and beat Paul, so it went according to plan (for once!).
Great day as I say, despite the constant jibes about my old mans graphite shafts and poncey iron head covers!
Really looking forward to a re-match at sometime in the future, hopefully on better greens.

Cheers James

yes the weather was great and so was the company. The hips were no problem James, although, the mean b*******s wouldn't negotiate any extra shots even when they could see that I was unable to hit as far as Pieman off the tee! The elevations at Crowborough are about the same as at my place so the walk presented no problems thanks

Hid your smiles - to be fair mate the smile looked like you had got a coat hanger lodged in your mouth!

Morning Chris. Well after the piss taking I had to put up with all of the way round, I had every right to smile!!

Did anyone take the piss? I must have missed that

I still cant get over the state of Paul (PN) I didn't get that muddy when I was a 10 year old !

I worked out my stableford score to 33 points - not too shabby on a new course and given that putting was difficult - it must have been the help from my team captain!
