I've played private members courses wearing jeans and a polo many times......

..admittedly I put my Sunderland waterproof trousers over the jeans but they were still there in principal :)

Could somone just TRY, and tell me what it is about denim without resorting to :
- only oilks and drunks wear them
- they are not comfortable for golf

i have yet to hear any sensible reason for being anti-denim

Someone please enlighten me and i might be willing to adjust my stance

Mayb its because of what is percieved and understood by the masses to be golf attire!? You may play football on the park in Jeans but turn out for your club side in them? You may also play cricket in them but on the staurday for your club side its gonna be whites (or colored if the occasion fits). Every sport has a dress code.

Well, it's just denim. That's it.

It was invented for miners, going down the pit, in the US.

If you are not a miner, then there is no excuse.

Many moons ago an old coffin dodger told me the rule on jeans was brought in for practical reasons. Jeans were workwear back in the mists of time and, generally, were only worn when doing a manual (mucky) job. What members didn't want back then was people coming into the club with dirty jeans on that they'd worn to work. Unfortunately what started out as a practical rule became forgotten and became don't wear jeans because, er um, the moon is made of blue cheese.

RUBBISH!!!! WELSHJIM most of the juniors or 20 somethings are driven by what ever pro is flavour of the month and dress accordingly remember when poulter broke into the big time every young lad doned similar outfits i think most young lads would sooner look like RICKY FOWLER than an extra from BROKE BACK MOUNTAIN.

Keep your pants or jeans on. I didn't mean exclusively juniors but you know young working folk like myself.

Most of my friends who don't play and consider the game an old man's sport so they don't have any interest in taking it up. Do you ever wear jeans on the course or not and if so why do you feel like an extra in BROKE BACK MOUNTAIN when you do i certainly don't because it is pretty normal to wear jeans. I am not suggesting it as normal golf clothing i just don't understand why people get so worked up about it. I for one spend more time playing golf than checking out what other players are wearing.

At my old club a stuck up snobby member wandered over once because whilst wearing shorts i had NORMAL length white socks on. He proceded to tell me that they were too short and really only women should wear shorts. I simply asked him how my socks had offended him from the other fairway and that he should focus on avoiding slow play by crossing fairways to moan about nothing whilst the group behind his had to wait. I also made a remark that if he didn't want to see my legs he didn't have to look.

For the record i have played golf with a few members from here. Twice at london golf club and once at Lydd. I don't believe they would label me as someone unpleasant to play golf with.

At my new local club where jeans, for the sensitive don't read on i am about to swear, are ALLOWED i am much happier. It is more friendly with hardly any snobby old fashioned behaviour. The standard of behaviour is better sadly the juniors let the side down by being extremely slow and there constant wandering around on the practice putting area meant it was out of action for several months recently. They make the seniors look like olympic sprinters.

Clearly the sort of bloke you could punch all night without ever feeling tired.

Happy to stick to the rules at whatever course I'm playing, if my club allowed jeans on the course I still wouldn't wear them - it's not a snobbery thing, for me it's about practicality and I don't feel jeans are practical for golf. Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy to slob around in jeans any other time.

Sorry but dont see the reasoning behind, knocking muni's? Ok I dont know what yours are like. But Heaton Park near me. Is a championship course, alway in good condition(better that a lot of private clubs). Never seen the 5 ball 1 bag boyyos'. No bad behaviour. Never seen any jeans.

They also have a newish club house with locker rooms, showers, a nice bar and restaurant. Plus a pro-shop. Par3 course(ok more a long pitch&put). Oh and a 10 bay driving range.

Can't say I see many Saturday morning football games where 3 of the players are in their jeans... or cricket matches or anyone at the leisure centre doing judo in theirs either (surely they'd be pretty good for fighting in?)

In the clubhouse isn't so bad I guess if the concensus from the majority of members requests it to be so. I'd rather be a member of a club that doesn't want people in jeans in the clubhouse (closet snob). I certainly wouldn't expect to go into a clubhouse in jeans.

Dress codes out here are far more relaxed and in the winter I play in jeans as warmer than shorts which i wear 9 months of the year and I've had some of my best rounds in them.
