So according to BJ, we are only allowed out the house to buy food, get medicine and once a day "to exercise".

Our dog needs 3 walks a day, so I'm walking him first thing, my daughter takes him out at lunchtime, and the missus takes him out late afternoon. He goes out in the garden for a pee last thing at night.

We are interpreting that as each of us using our "Exercise" quota. However, what happens if you are on your own with a dog, or in a flat?

I appreciate that dogs need more than one walk a day, but is the scenario where one person takes their dog out more than once breaking the rules?

Also, what constitutes reasonable exercise? I've seen folk posting on social media about taking their dog for an 8 mile hike which is surely taking the proverbial?

There was someone answering questions on tv yesterday, didn't catch the name but had a good approach. Kept coming back to the intention.

Would you be increasing the risk of catching/spreading the virus.

Something to think about, how would the dog cope if all 3 of you were confined to bed if ill.

It's tricky. I'm a dog owner also but ours are pretty old now and happy for a little potter up a deserted footpath close to the house once a day.

I've got a nutcase of a springer, he would be tearing the house apart if he didn't get a couple of good walks a day.

I'm about to take him out, fortunately we've got a load of farmers' fields at the back of ours, so I take him over them, the only time I'm likely to see anyone else is the 5 minute walk to the first field. If I took him for a quick walk to the local park (2 minutes away), I'd come into contact with loads more dog owners.

Isn't nutcase the default setting for Springers? :)

I guess by saying exercise once a day they meant to not put a intentional duration limit on it or they would have said '1 hour max' or something akin to that. I think most people would interpret 'once' as an hour or less for a walk or run or cycle but for sporty types that is often way longer. Personally think they should have time limited it.

Following IanM's post #4 hypothetically If I opted to drive an hour to Glen Nevis with my dog and/or immediate family then decided to walk up Ben Nevis the whole trip from home would take 10 hours+. Sounds daft but in theory I think I could do that and not be in contravention of guidance. I wouldn't have to stop at petrol stations. Chance of a vehicle breakdown is normal, chance of an RTA is lower than normal given how little traffic there is and a great less HGVs on the road so less overtaking risk.

Except the driving is not essential, so goes against all the hypothesis’s(spelling). Someone, somewhere, is probably planning the scenario you’ve described.

I suspect they were (may be naively) expecting people to use their common sense. So as you say once a day is normally up to 1 hour for most people, indeed I expect there are people getting way more exercise now than they did a week ago.

My daily dog walk is about 70 minutes and I do a 150 mins one on Saturdays that I will still do. Despite the recent influx of townies round these parts taking advantage of the good weather and fields I still see relatively few people, and I expect I see fewer people in 70 minutes then you would walking a dog in an urban environment in 10 minutes. If my dog walk suddenly becomes an exercise in avoiding people every 50 yards I will reconsider. Enforcing a time limit on people is extremely hard to do practically as I can be deep in the countryside but have only been walking for 10 minutes, where as it may take others a long time to get there, so how do you know how long people have been walking?

How dare you use such language!!!!! People seem unable to use common sense nowadays. They complain when they aren’t told what to do and then moan when they are. The main issue is to avoid people as much as possible so people need to think about where and when they go out, not just about how many times

Rupert needs a min of two hours a day, but been taking him for a hour maybe a bit longer and trying to avoid any contact.

a few month ago he had a cut paw and couldn't really do much, as the vet put it, not going for a walk isn't going to kill him.... putting yourself at risk wont do him any good either

I'll post this with a warning about the language and hope I don't upset the mods. For me of all the funny stuff coming out this was the best yet. I keep watching it and chuckling which can't be a bad thing...

I'll say again (so please don't watch and complain) there is swearing in this and the word begins with f...

Just back after 90 minutes with the dog. Passed 4 other dog walkers in the entire time, stopped for quick chats with 2 of them I know, from a distance of about 5 yards. For me, rural dog walking is on a par with golf for the safest outdoor activity there currently is.

We had 2 until a few weeks ago when the older one had to be put to sleep. He was a nutter for the first 3 years, but then calmed right down. So when he was 6 we got another one. The other one is now 7 years old and still totally bonkers. If we had the younger one first, we would never have got another one!

Oh I'm sure there will be one happy camper complaining... ;)

Is the “f” word farage? ??

One of the question I would ask is are you keeping your dog on a lead at all times?

Dog A off the lead Dog B off the lead.

They socially interact as a lot of dogs do.

You give him a nice good stroke when he gets back he licks your face ...................

The World Health Organization has stated, “There is no evidence that a dog, cat or any pet can transmit COVID-19. COVID-19 is mainly spread through droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. To protect yourself, clean your hands frequently and thoroughly.”

That crossed my mind the other day when out, I'd hope that as the dog finds his way into every pond, mire and ditch on his walk that the risk would be minimised but I just dont know how resilient this virus is to hanging onto fur and being submerged etc. There are so many ways you can pass it around, even with the best will and a robust cleaning regime one tiny slip/lapse is all it takes.
