COLLAR AND TIE

Right folks - quick query. I'm playing in a comp shortly that says presentation follows play, gentlemen, collar and tie please. Being new to the whole formal thing (my previous club thought jeans a polo was smart), does this mean I need a jacket / blazer on, or just shirt and tie? It's the 'collar' part I'm not so wise on.

I'd assume the collar bit means shirt, and not a round neck or mock t shirt.

Reading collar and tie mean Shirt and tie to me, if you want to wear a blazer bash on but i don't think you'd get turned away for not having one on!
 
no, jacket, shirt and tie. better to have than not and anyway some clubs require them. check the website for where you're playing, most have dress rules listed somewhere.

we've gone to places where you don't even remove your jacket on a hot day without the captain's permission.
(may be archaic but if you want to play their track you abide by their rules.)
 
I've played a few courses in Edinburgh where Jacket,shirt & tie are required, a load of ********* if you ask me, it's golf ffs!Needless to say, I've never gone back to either course (Royal Burgess & Muirfield) when invited again.
 
Cheers folks - I'll ask my playing partners whether or not I need a jacket, and then pop home if I do, I just live down the road.

Unfortunately I've never had to wear a tie in my life, but am getting the hang of tying a half windsor now! New experiences - I got my mates to do them up for me before graduation / job interviews.

Thanks again - I'll let you know how I get on, both at the golf and in the clubhouse. That's if I don't get 'collared' by the captain, arf arf.
 
You might need some trousers too, unless it is a masonic apron thingy do.

Some clubs are picky when you are wandering about in your boxers, even with a tie on.
 
I went on my first Rabbits captains away day last week and turned up at our clubhouse with my clubs and noticed lots of suit cases!! what a nightmare, no one told me it was jacket and tie for the evening meal. I ended up wearing the same clothes i played in for the meal :( I will know for next year!!

Why not just take it with you and leave it in the car? If you need it you can nip out and get it...that would be a lot less trouble than going home - even if it is close by.
 
I'm guessing that means shirt, tie and a jacket. I normally just take a suit in a suit carrier and leave everything (shirt and tie inside the jacket) in the locker room so its there at the end especially as I've been in the last groups before and play has been slow and so have had to rush to shower and change as they are waiting to serve the food. There'd be no time to go home for the jacket then

Why take such offense ?

I don't ever wear a jacket and tie, but for my job interview last year I treated myself to a £69.99 special from Burtons. It's now tucked up in my wardrobe ready for when I'm lucky enough to be invited to play a quality course like you've mentioned.

Clothes is clothes. When I go out, I dress for the comfort of the company I'm in, not necessarily for my comfort. Down the pub with the lads it's t-shirt and jeans. Same pub with SWMBO it's chinos and a polo or even a proper shirt.

What did you really expect when visiting these two clubs ? The Burgess ( The Royal Burgess Golfing Society) and Muirfield ( The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers) are two of the oldest clubs in the area. They both have their roots back in the early development of the game at Musselburgh and shared the course there with Royal Musselburgh and Bruntsfield Links. Royal Musselburgh is the only one of the four which is a normal working mans golf club. The other three are very much more affluent exclusive clubs so can make whatever rules suit them.

I must say that the last time I played at the Burgess, I didn't need jacket and tie in the spike bar afterwards. However, I think you are still required to wear them in the dinning room and the main bar. But hey, why not.

You would refuse to go back and play at those courses because you were asked to wear a collar and tie???
Total and utter madness....or similar
 
Cheers folks - ran home through a cow field and got my shirt and tie, was told jackets weren't required. Got 4th prize, and I was one of the only ones in a shirt and tie, most just in their golf gear.

Will keep the tie knotted around the shirt for future presentations ;-)
