I agree it's a different beast, but surely the risk with Strokeplay is, is that that only identifies the best golfer on one day and maybe not the best player, Matchplay at least gives a chance to the better more consistent player.

I don't agree, it is still who plays better over 18 holes. I played a guy off scratch in our scratch K/O when I was off 6 and beat him because I was better on the day over 18 holes but he is a better player than me and I would expect him to beat me over 36 holes scratch pretty much every time.

Sorry, slightly confused, don't agree with me agreeing it's a different beast or the matchplay gives a chance to the more consistent player.

If it's the Matchplay point, that's the risk as you stated, the better golfer can get beaten, our's is a nett Comp and is usually between 5 players, unless someone on the edge has a blinding 36 holes.

I think the issue with any of these discussions is terminology, if you stick to how do you decide your Club champion, it's an easy answer, if it's how do you decide who is your Club's best player it's not so easy.

I've read this 3 times and each time I get even more confused :D

do we need a club champs to find out who the best golfer in the club is ,surely the h/cap says who is the best golfer in the club . so in reality the so called club champs is just another competition .

This is one way of looking at it I suppose but not one I would agree with. You could argue why have competitions in that case which logically would mean nobody had a handicap which means you can't determine who is the best player in the club which means you need to have a scratch competition to find out who is............

i think most people know who the best golfer in their respective club is.
im trying to play devils advocate here.
its just that the h/cap system sorts out who is best,
the club champs are a pat on the back for the better players in the club ,the true club best player is, and must be the lowest h/capper. not just the bloke who shoots lowest in a competition ,be it over one round or more.
hence the club champs are just another comp ,all be it for the better players of the club.
its not always the best golfer that wins .unless the comp isas you say played off scratch ,then it becomes who was best on the day or days ,it still dosent produce the best golfer in the club as he or she might be a higher h/cap than the true best in the club .who had an off day.

I'm confused by this, I always thought lowest gross scores sorted out who is best. I would say that if someone is consistently 'best' based on handicap then that person should have their handicap reviewed.

I think the point being made was the player who consistently shoots the lowest gross scores week in week out season after season will have the lowest handicap and therefore will be the better player, where as over a single round/weekend another player could shoot a lower gross score during the club champs and therefore win that competition, but still not necessarily be the best player in the club?

im not saying the champs are played on h/cap ,but the club member who is the lowest h/cap in the club is the best golfer in the club. not the bloke who has a good day for one or two rounds .

i will add that i think a true club champs should be played off of scratch.

It's a bit like saying the Open or the Masters doesn't necessarily produce the best golfer. Any championship is won by the best player over the course of the competition. To use nett scores, however, makes no sense. Most clubs, including mine, run a handicap competition alongside the championship but the "Champion" is the player with the lowest gross score, always has been.

What is being said here does make sense I guess but you could then also say just scrap club championships and award the trophy to the lowest handicapper

I certainly wouldn't like to see that as the Club Championship is by far the most prestigious competition of the year at my club and I'm sure it's the same in many others. I think the only reason for the comments above were in reply to previous comments made by others that the club champs are won by the best player in the club as clearly that is not always the case.

This is very true, both clubs I'm a member of have a few + handicappers and at that level they are more interested in county/national stuff than playing in CC.

However, you can still only beat those competing on the day and the lowest gross should ALWAYS be the club champion*

*unless the club has a matchplay format

The Club Champion isn't necessarily the best player in the club. He/she is the player who played best in the Club Championship competition.

The winner of the Open Championship is called the "Champion Golfer of the Year", not the "best player in the world".

Be it strokeplay or matchplay, I believe it should be a gross competition.

It's a shame the 4 people who voted nett haven't given their reasons.

Agreed 100%.

One of my clubs the championship finals day clashes with one of the big women's inter county dates so I haven't entered in case I make the county team. Bit of a bummer really but you're right about priorities.
