Class system

Wasn’t it always management were middle class and their work force were working class

But that manager works for someone

Like my job so many people answer to me but I have to answer to one person above me who oversees it and signs off some things that we need to do

That sounds about right. Things were more clear cut back in the day. People worked in factories, those on the shop floor were working class, if you were in the office as a manger you were middle class, if you were the boss you might be upper class. It reminds me of 60's and 70's comedies. Much healthier now things have become blurred.

Back in the day if you were paid a wage (weekly) you were 'working class'... If you received a salary (monthly) you were middle class...

Not so sure, nowadays, what the measure would be... Lazy way would be to define it on what tax bracket...

By that my mum is middle classes (head of department at a school so salaried) and my dad is working class as he is paid weekly (Royal Mail)

Funny tho as their parents my father comes from the most middle class (insurance salesman been retired since 55 my grandad has) and my mums parents working class for sure (working class and proud my other grandad always said god bless his soul)

Thatcher's greatest trick was persuading a large percentage of the working class that they were actually middle class, after buying their council houses and shares in the likes of BT and British Gas.

How is that a trick? She gave people an opportunity to improve themselves, to have aspirations to do better than their parents generation. To have a stake in society. For me this was the greatest thing Margaret Thatcher ever did.

and what about their children's generation, who can't afford to buy a house and are forced into the hands of private landlords charging exorbitant rents?

the sale of council houses and nationalised industries at vastly discounted rates was sheer political vandalism. It was a former Tory Prime Minister who described it as "selling off the family silver".

Surely the real blame in respect of council housing, lies with that government and ALL future governments that did not build new council housing to replace the old stuff sold off.

I know that doesn't quite fit your comments, but any future government can give planning on a cheap piece of land and build subject to giving itself planning, but all governments haven't really dealt with the issue imho. The selling off I do not have a problem with per se.

The old stock is pretty poor from what I have seen with my own family and clients, so selling off isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does need replacing with new stuff.

changing attitudes to the whole class system, i suspect most would now identify as Middle class.

My father for instance, went to Public school and ran his own business, but as a socialist he still called himself working class.

myself, i suppose definitely middle, but some of my friends call me a toff because i went to a public school and wear a tweed jacket:rolleyes:

With my paid for house, family car and golf club membership I suppose I would be classed as lower middle class (based on earnings) but I have definite working class aspirations!

The old buying your council house is a funny one. At the time I saw it as a good move but move a generation further on and most people needing council assistance are crippled by a chronic shortage of council owned properties. Even these affordable housing and local housing scheme (Thames Valley Housing etc) require a partial payment from the buyers and this is still beyond some peoples reach. Some are on the property ladder but what will happen in the future once interest rates begin to climb?

How much do you need to earn before you would say yes I’m middle class?

Tax at 40% is that middle class?

How much to have a season ticket for football? Buy the shirt, have a beer, go the match. Classic working class pastime if we go by stereotypes. It costs as much to do that as it does to play golf in Northumberland.

If you work you choose what to spend your money on. Golf, football, the horses, beer. You could spend the same amount on any of those. Three would be deemed working class pastimes, stereotypes again, but why not all 4?

My golf fees are £1,100 at an ok parkland, my LFC season ticket is £725.00.

I can imagine that in less populated areas like North Wales, Cumbria, North east (from what Ive heard) that them figures would be the other way around.

I assume that the PM of the day would be the one to formulate this plan to restock prior to selling off everything?
Otherwise its irresponsible at best and neglectful even criminal at worst

After all she was the one that raked in the coin!
