Can a Lady be a Club captian of the mens section

We no longer have a Club Captain, we have a Gentlemen's Captain and a Lady Captain. No idea why it's not Gentleman and Lady, or Gentlemen's and Ladies'.

The Captains are not members of the General Committee, although they are invited to attend without any voting rights.

Because it leads to people wondering whether it's acceptable to have a female captain at a golf club.. In the year Two Thousand and Twenty Four...
People are wondering if it's appropriate to have a female captain of the men's section.
Not to many are asking if there should be a female captain of the club.
We've had two recently and retained different sections.

And what about junior and senior sections?

Having a female club captain I think is widely accepted now, this isnt the question that was asked remember so I dont think this needs to go down the "golf is stuck in the dark ages route" and bring equality into it, whether you think that is right in 2024 or not.

Are junior and senior sections usually separated by gender?

We don't have any sections at our club, doesn't stop the older members playing and socialising together, nor the lady members. The boy plays in the same comps as me, and the blokes, and the girls, regardless of age.

I know this wasn't the actual question, but it may actually answer it anyway in a roundabout way. Why have a captain? I've never really seen the need. I've seen what they do but in reality a club would be no worse off if the position didn't exist.

In answer to the question, if no Male stands for mens captain, don't have one.

We have a club captain and a ladies captain. Some years we do not have a male captain. But we always have two captains.
This for us. Our current club captain is a female, so I guess there is no such thing as a "men's captain". There is a ladies captain as well though.

Such decisions are within the remit of your club, nobody can or interfere with whatever decision your club makes. Maybe worth the opportunity to review your rules and how they fit in to the modern world.

Very much this!
I actually have no idea who the captain of our club is, I’m sure we have one.
When I first joined a few years back a guy came up to our table in the club house to ask how we were all doing etc, I looked at him like he had two heads and said fine, he realised I hadn’t a clue who he was so introduced himself as so and so the club captain. I just replied “oh” and went about my previous conversation.
I suppose some new members would like that sort of introduction and chat from the captain, so maybe it’s a good thing for some perhaps

Surely there is a men's captain and a ladies' captain, and one of them is club captain as well?

Ask the question the other way around - would the female members be happy with a man as the captain of the ladies' section? I think probably not.

It seems quite obvious to me, so maybe I'm misunderstanding the OP.

Yes. My local gym, car park, pub and swimming pool don't have captains, so I'm not quite sure why my golf course needs one. It's not like the past captains were elected because they are great sporting leaders or tacticians.

We have a club captain who can be male or female , same with the President

The Ladies Section also have a Ladies Captain - if a Lady was Club captain she wouldn’t necessarily fill the Ladies Captain

The club Captain is the clubs figure head , he runs charity days , social functions , and will captain the club team in their friendly fixtures with local clubs

There is also the Seniors Captain who steers the seniors section in their events , same with the Junior

If no one stands forward then to me it shows the club doesn’t see the need for a captain full stop. It clearly doesn’t carry the weight it once did.

I must admit I hardly think it's a bad thing for a club captain to be welcoming to new members even if you didn't need it.

Absolutely, as I said I think some would welcome that, it’s something a captain might add to a club during his/her time as captain.
Sorry if my comment didn’t bring that across, yes for me it didn’t do anything for me, but certainly wasn’t a negative and as said some people might really like it

Because it's the way it's always been and people hate change / progress

Yet wonder why golf gets the image of stuffy and struggles to shake it

No. We are male only.

Similarly there is a female only club up the road.

We have reciprocal house memberships but completely separate clubs with an occasional mixed and family comp.

It seems to work just fine.

So who chairs the club AGM or committee meetings if you have no captain?
Football teams have captains and rugby teams and in fact the Ryder Cup/Solheim Cup teams

We have 2 sections. Men, Ladies and 3 subsections, Juniors, Seniors, Rabbits. They all have section captains. The captain of the Men's section and the captain of the Ladies' section are jointly Club Captains.

The President (elected biennially) chairs the AGM and EGMs.
