But none of us have a clue. So it’s another stick to beat the club with based purely on speculation.

imo there will be very few bame members, but it will be due to societys issues (less mega rich bame) than anything else.
Didnt Bill Gates struggle to get membership?
if there were more than 10 black members it be surprised.
Black people may not even want to be members there because of their history as well. Rather join somewhere that's always been welcoming rather than just recently.

I think you’d struggle to find anywhere that fit that bill

We wouldn't have this issue if Augusta National had just invited a load of chompers to their tournament instead of the masters of their trade.

Georgia State Hack-fest has quite a ring to it.

Masters referred to "top players" - did then and still does. Sure I said somewhere else, there's sufficient racism going on that needs fighting without inventing daft stuff to divert attention like this. (but hey man, look at me, I am offended by the name of a golf tournament! :) )

This whole thread is pretty eye opening and after reading all the comments thus far here my opinion -

Rename it back to its original name. I believe it was quoted earlier as "The Augusta National Invitational". Sounds like the perfect name for a major to me. The club clearly has a strong racist past, statues have been ripped up across england and massive changes are being made across the world now to support the BAME community. Its the right thing to do and the only way forward. "It's always been that way" or anything similar is just a pathetic excuse.

For those trying to make jokes of the subject, shame on you.

Can you name any black players that have boycotted the tournament because of it's name? I can't think of any.

It is 2020 and we do not have racial equality. Education is why people want these things changed. They have realised entire cities were built on the slave trade, roads named after slave traders, prestigious clubs with no racial equality, the same clubs with tournaments named after deep rooted racism. Education is why we are at this crossroads. History is being rewritten but we need golf clubs, football clubs, large corporations to be owned by BAME. Then we will see the change that should have come decades ago.

Not being argumentative but i think i disagree with you on this point , i suspect the majority of BAME people will not give a rats arse who owns what as long as they get equal opportunities .
The clubs\corporations need to be owned\run by the best person for the job not someone defined by his\her skin colour or heritage .It would be great if that person was from the BAME community
but , again , in my opinion just putting someone in a position just because of their racial background does no service to the aims of movements like BLM and the wider BAME community .
True equality is giving all the same opportunities , education and living standards and this is what we should strive for .

Why is that important at all? Would Messi boycott the world cup - no, would federer boycott wimbedon - no. So why would a BAME player not play? He/she doesnt have to agree with the name to play in the tournament.

If you were arguing the Augusta should lose it's status as the only fixed site Major because of its past, and fairly recent behaviours, I can see the logic of that. That's worth a debate. It might be tough to argue against,

But - objecting to a word, the meaning of which IN THIS CONTEXT is not racist?? Really?

Maybe it's time to burn all copies of Anna Sewell's best seller?

If things were genuinely named with race in mind, then there is a valid case to change the name, e.g. Washington Redskins.

While race has always been a very controversial subject in the Southern States of the US (and obviously Augusta National maintained a white only policy and a black caddy policy for a long time) the organisation has adapted to an at least acceptable level of inclusivity in terms of race.

I don't believe the Masters was named with slave connotations in mind. I'm sure it was an attempt to separate this as a top quality invitational event as opposed to the Open competitions of the day with qualifying and larger fields.

Oh nah, I dont want the Major moved from Augusta. I can just understand the calls for the actual name of the tournament itself to be renamed. Its really not that much of a big deal to rename it something that doesnt offend anyone is it? People in here are quite literally arguing because they dont want a name change, but I bet those saying it are white? (I am too). If the term "master" is offending people then just change it, god almighty its just a name :ROFLMAO: still the same outstanding golf course with all the green jacket tradition we love.

My point is that they are probably not offended by it so why should anyone else be?

I dont think that matters, its just a societal change. As i said before, if the names offending people, fans or players, make a simple change to the name? I wouldnt not watch the tournament because the name changed, dont think anyone would?

Exactly, so why the need to change it?

Because the current name, as is suggested by the original post, is offending people of the BAME community. Why dont you care about those that are offended? Just because you're not and players "probably" arent... Ignorance is quite clearly bliss

From what I can see in that article it appears to be a very small minority and I think a bit of education about the meaning of the word 'masters' might be more appropriate than changing the name of the tournament.

But hey, it's fashionable for minorities to change things that affect majorities these days. Do we need to change the name of the tennis Masters series too?

It shouldn't be at all.

Do we know the Masters specifically refers to the best of the trade, as posted as fact by many on here? Roberts was overtly racist.

A quick google search xcomes up with a couple of answers

"The first "Augusta National Invitational" Tournament, as the Masters was originally known, began on March 22, 1934. The present name was adopted in 1939"

"How did the world's most famous golf tournament receive its name?

The answer goes back to 1934, when the event was created.

Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, the founders of the event, originally named the tournament, The Augusta National Invitational Tournament. When Roberts proposed the name, The Masters, Jones objected, believing the name was too presumptuous. However, five years later, Jones relented and the name was officially changed"

I think that if someone is looking at The Masters and thinking there is something wrong with the name, is seeing a problem that does not exist
