Annual hcp review cut for people reaching or winning a match play final

My regular pp played the handicap sec in a knockout comp last year. The week before the played he messaged him and said that as he had played well the week before he was reviewing his h/c and cut him an extra 2 shots . Not even close to subtle. I'm pleased to say that my pp still beat him 🥳
Absolutely no words!! Effectively trying to use his power to put the odds in his favour of a win and that’s another form of cheating and abusing his position.

2 stories:

Quite a few years back we were sat in the Clubhouse after playing in a 4BBB Comp and a young lad came in bragging how well he’d played, bit a banter started about him being a bandit and should be cut.

He then got a bit full of himself and the old “well there’s nothing you can do” and laughing.

One of the guys from the handicap committee who been sat quietly listening disappeared into the committee room, came back and informed the lad he’d carried out a review and had cut him 4 shots.😂😂

Lad lost his rag and stormed out.

This was back in the days when these things happened in clubs, thankfully well behind us now.

2nd story, I’ve mentioned it on here before:

2 lads from our place reached the National finals of the Dail Mail Foursomes down at St Pierre.

They were drawn in the first round against a pair from a 9 hole course in Kent, the 2 guys from our place were off 4 & 7, the guys from Kent 1 & 35.

Our lads were beaten 6&5 and that was the closest anyone got to these 2.

Upon investigation it turned out the guy of 35 had been of 25 at some point, had a shoulder op and when he came back to play he was given an increase to 30 and tgen had risen to 35.

All of this was over a 2 year period, when his record was looked at he had not submitted a card in over 20 months, yet in that time he had played 8 times in the Regional Foursomes to get to St Pierre, so obviously he could play.

They won the National title and since this the Daily Mail have changed the rules to max 18 handicap.

Their club was contacted along with the Kent County authorities to ask why his Club had not carried out any reviews or asked him why he hadn’t put any cards in.

Presumably the moral of this story is he should have had a larger cut.

To round this off, my element of the thread. My pp is a high handicapper who puts in lots of cards, his handicap is genuine. I think he was off about 25 at the time, he is down to 21 now. He never burns a course up but his scores are up and down. He can play one or two shots under his handicap but also 10 over. He does more of the latter than the former but enough of the former to have the handicap he does. He won his game because he played steady that day and his opponent didn't, nothing more complicated than that. The h/c cut fired him up, made him concentrate more. Had the guy not done it he more than likely would have beaten him. It's given us a laugh anyway 🤷‍♂️

Just to be clear I was only joking.
99% of golfers are just out to play golf to the best of their ability and have some fun and exercise.
I’m sure LT friend is one of these. 👍

I do find it a little odd that some golfers could get so upset about their handicap being cut that they’d escalate their upset to county level. It’s a game for goodness sake, and a game that we surely play mostly for fun; with a bit of success being welcome if it comes along, but for most of us it just can’t be the money that comes with winning that matters - so why the getting sooo upset.

Is is normal/reasonable/expected for a club to cut members who have won or even reached a club match play knock out comp?
If this is done at your place, is it just singles or are those in 4 ball or foursomes match play comp also cut at your place?

This is not at my club but another I heard about. Thanks.
In isolation...absolutely not.

In conjunction with other evidence that might suggest that a players index needs adjusting.........maybe.

No, it is not normal/reasonable/expected.
Handicap adjustments should only ever be applied on the evidence of scores.
Match play results are evidence only of scoring better than someone else on more holes than them, which could be good or bad relative to their current handicap.
