Everyone, I hope, has one shot in their round that stands out above the rest, in a good way.

Even if you've had an absolute 'mare, there is always (to me) one shot that keeps you going back again. Be it a long putt, good drive, knocking a wedge close, there's always something.

I had a great round at the weekend, shooting a gross 76. Even through I hit quite a few good shots, one stood out above the rest and it was a recovery shot.

From the tee, against a strong left to right wind, I tried to hit my usual draw and hold it against the wind. I managed to over-cook the draw and ended up in an orchard at the end (left) of the fairway.

The only clear shot I had out was at a 45° angle to the green. I had the option of pitching it out on that line, leaving me a full wedge/easy short iron approach to the green to be on in 3 (Par 4), or try something a little more risky.

I went for the latter :D

I decided to try and play a low, running hook. Purely on the basis that if the ball didn't hook, I would have a relatively easy wedge shot from where I was aligned. I aimed my club face just to the right of the trees I was trying to miss, and my stance much, much further right.

Stood over the ball with a 7 iron, with the club face was massively closed compared to my toe line and back a little more than usual.

Committed to my decision and played the shot.

The ball missed the lead tree and shot out low in the direction of the fairway. The ball started to curve, quite violently, to the left, and was then running straight down the fairway, online for the green. At this point I lost sight of the ball due to the trees.

After walking out of the trees, I could see my ball sat on the green. After my playing partners had played, we all walked to the green to find my ball 20ft from the pin, pin high left.

For me, it's a great feeling when you consider what options you have in a given situation, make a decision, commit, and get the result you played for. Purely as it doesn't happen every time you try it

Would I have played the same shot in competition play? Being honest, probably so.

As I said above, if the ball didn't hook, and flew straight, I would still have had a relatively easy pitch to the green. I guess you could call it a calculated risk.

So that's the shot of mine from my last round that stood out above the rest.

What's yours

On Saturday it was not the 30 foot putt for a 2 and scooping the two's money which was my best shot of the day. Strangely I was much more pleased with a 'taking-my-medicine' wedge from a filthy, filthy buried lie in the rough. Ball came out sweet as a nut back onto the fairway in position A1, albeit for 2. Easy bogey from there and moved on.... If the ball hadn't come out I might have been still diggin'

My 2-iron approach to the last on Saturday is the standout shot for me. Hit a relatively poor drive, and left myself a good 220 away. Ball was sat down a little, with a patch of heather about 6 inches behind the ball. Haven't been hitting my hybrid at all well recently, so plumped for the 2 iron. Just committed to it and striped the nuts off the bacll and it came out like a rocket. Finished 5 yards from the front edge so knocked it on and made par.

Roll on next weekend

There is a valley / dip about 2/3 of the way along a par 5 at my course. My second shot invariably ends up in that dip as it is at the edge of my range, sometimes I simply lay up. After a good long irons lesson the previous week I took out my 6 iron and decided to simply go for it. I managed to repeat every aspect of what I am supposed to do, hit the ball as sweetly as I can possibly do, it went arrow straight, high and landed 10yds past the valley. I just stood, smiled and enjoyed the moment. Not as sexy as a shot into a green or a draw around a corner but it was a personal triumph for me.

I rolled in a lovely putt on the 3rd yesterday. It was a funny old round of golf. I was hitting the ball atrosciously, worse than I have done for months, but still managed an 87 for 34 points. I 4 putted on one hole, that cost me dearly.

I was 1over through 14, middle of the fairway on a par 5 with 90yds left in, fancied knocking it close.

Shanked it.

It was a good shank though, right out of the sweet spot of the hosel.

Brilliant.

2nd shot to Par 5 fifth in our place last Tuesday,

lake left , bunkers right , river a bit in front , after a par , bogey , bogey , birdie start , smashed a good drive down the right 195ish to flag , 180 to the middle 145 to carry the river.. anywhere on green to for 2 putt birdie to get back to level par

Down breeze had to go for it

6 iron .. pured it.. lands middle of the green and releases up to about 3 feet . eagle and back to -1 ..

Played a lovely 80 yard pitch to the 16th at Moray, yesterday.. the 16th is the trickiest of the greens at Moray and there was a nasty pin position. Last to go, the other 3 had all either come up short or long.

SW, landed, took one hop then stopped right by the hole.

Id rather be lucky than good any day of the week;)

This is an easy one. We play in fours and always have a fiver on the match which was all square with one opponent getting a shot up 18th so we didn't look favourites. I hit good drive but just reached fairway bunker 75 yards short of green. Played bunker shot to 6 feet with spin and everything right in front of the clubhouse and went on to hole the putt for the cash!

Tee shot rolled off fairway and ended up in just in a plantation of young pines. Ball sitting well and I had a clear swing at it - but my face was just in the branches of the pine tree my ball was under - and I couldn't really see the ball when I took my stance - so basically swinging blind with risk of a poke in the eye if my head moved much. Took a steady swing and hit a sweet 6i 145 yds to edge of greenside bunker. Didn't get up and down mind so still dropped a shot.

Playing in our end of season trophy winners championship yesterday, 4 under my handicap, right hand side of 15th fairway in the first cut, 175 yards to the middle.

Hit a high, drawing 5iron, best contact of the day, pitched on the front then stopped on the second bounce, 10 feet right of the pin.

Lipped the birdie putt, made par to go 5 under my handicap, then made triple on 16, double on 17, then NRd down the last having lost 2 balls off the tee.

Complete metdown lost me the comp, but consoled myself with the thought of 15 very good holes and possibly the best single shot of my season.

Not spectacular but I have been practising trying to add the checking chip shot into my repertoire.

Nailed it on the 18th yesterday - 40 yards from the pin, chipped it right at it, one bounce and it stopped a couple of feet from the hole. Holed the putt for a birdie.

Played a lovely 80 yard pitch to the 16th at Moray, yesterday.. the 16th is the trickiest of the greens at Moray and there was a nasty pin position. Last to go, the other 3 had all either come up short or long.

I had my first hole in one on the 6th on the Old Moray course. Had a two on it in the afternoon too. Officially owned that hole for the day.

My best shot of the day on Saturday came immediately after one of my worst. Topped my tee shot on the par4 5th hole at Sand Moor and didnt even reach the fairway. The watch said I had 205 to the pin, up hill shot with a cross wind to the narrow part of the green. Absolutely flushed a 5 iron which pitched and stopped about 20 ft from the flag. Made an easy par.

A 22° hybrid from 220 yards, slightly downwind to finish 12 feet right of the flag on on our 13th to leave an eagle putt...which just missed to leave a tap-in birdie..!

2nd last shot of my last round, bunker shot from the greenside bunker to 12 inches leaving a tap in par.

Doesn't sound that important but when you need bogey at worst to break 80 for the first time in a comp and you approach a ball with a bad lie in the bunker it makes it all the sweeter to do that.

I used to regularly review my round to find the 3 best ranking shots as it made me focus and think about the good stuff only.

Played well yesterday and have to pick 4 - seriously can't separate them! 7i to the 1st and lipped out for eagle leaving a tap in birdie. Hybrid into the 6th from thick, wet rough and in a divot...whined and moaned about my bad luck and then somehow nailed it to a back pin. 7 wood into the 12th into the teeth of the wind and thought it would never come back down to earth...landed 10' from the pin (3 putted!!). Finally a 7 wood to the last again into the teeth of the wind...in the rough on the upslope of a bunker and not sure still how I pulled it off.

A good day on the course despite the flipping wind!

125 yards into the 15th green, hit a really nice low wedge in...thought it was going straight through so gave a loud "sit down", luckily it did about 10 feet from the pin and stopped instantly, gave me a birdie putt (which I missed).

My second shot at our 15th.

Hit a good drive in the fairway and hit a 4 iron aswell as I probably can onto the front of the green. Greens narrow at the front and surrounded by deep bunkers.

2 putt birdie only enough to half the hole with karl_102 right enough!
