To Tee or not to Tee?

Was out last night with Jamie, he just played a few practice holes round Huddersfield while I walked round.
Got to the 8th, I walked up to green to film his shots coming into the green.
Its 150 slightly uphill - he’s selected an 8 iron.
1st ball - Pro V1. Comes up short lands dead.
2nd ball - Srixon Z Star. Pushed right, finds a bunker.
3rd ball - Taylor Made distance. Lands marginally further on than shot 1, rolls up pin high.

When I asked what he’d changed for the last shot he said he didn't peg it up.
if you watch the video you can see the last ball finds a flatter landing spot allowing it to roll forwards, which I personally feel is the difference between shot 1 and shot 3, but with or without a tee he’s produced 2 very similar shots.

I would always opt to tee it up unless it’s s really short par 3.
Just wondering what other people find works best for them?

Always tee it up. It gives you the best lie, why wouldn't you?

If not teeing it up was a good move, the pro's would be doing it. They don't get sponsored for using tees so they use them for a reason.

Ultimately, his choice but I would keep using a tee, it will give greater consistency.

I think people who don't use tees are daft. But maybe they're influenced by other golfers who mostly all tee it up too high.

For everything other than driver, I use the lime green castle tees - the lowest ones. So I can put them in loosely for 3 wood, say, so it's 7 or 8 mm off the ground, or press them in a bit more firmly if I'm hitting a wedge on a short par 3, so it's only like 4 or 5 mm above the grass. Any higher and you hit it too high on the face. As LT said above, it's just about giving yourself a good lie so none of the ball is sitting down in the grass.

I do see plenty of people teeing it over a centimetre with a 7 iron for example, then hitting a high, spinny shot that comes up short and wondering what went wrong.

Lovely 3rd shot.. Would've been quality to have gotten an ace recorded..

Most of the time I do but will sometimes just 'build a mound' with the clubhead, when using tee it'll only be a smidge higher than a preferred lie for an iron shot, I want it sitting proud not separate to the ground

I always tee like others but for irons my tee is very low.

The exception to this is if playing off mats in winter when a tee seems superfluous unless playing a wood.
Oh yeah, this for me as well. If I'm hitting a wedge or short iron off a winter mat, I can't get the tee in low enough so I just have to hit off the mat. Usually a perfect lie though so it's all good.

I usually use a tee, but I go through spells of struggling using a tee for some reason. Often come out a bit chunky. It’s something I’m constantly working on. I’ll then go a few rounds off the deck, with not much more success, and go back to using a tee!

Or you could say that with a tee he produced 2 very different shots :ROFLMAO:
Just goes to show what a difficult game this is, however good you get.

I pretty much always tee - find a broken one, press it in so just the very top is above the ground.

The exception might be that I've played the first par 3 poorly, using a tee, but otherwise I've been striking my irons really well that day. In that case, I'll just find a nice lie on the tee box and play it like any other iron shot. Sometimes the tee just gets in my head, especially if I've thinned it.

Hard to tell whether the tee makes a difference from such a small sample size, especially using three different balls.

The first was a good shot and behaved as one would expect with a ProV landing into an upslope with a well struck short iron.

Same with the second, it was short right as a typical flared rigs should would be.

The third probably flew lower and released due the distance ball having less spin rather than whether it was on a tee or not. Great shot regardless.

Personally, I would always tee it up given the opportunity.

"What is it with kids, think they can hit it further than they can?"

kid proceeds to nearly hole it

What is it with adults, assuming that they always know best?

So many variables in golf. Impossible for a human to make two identical swings in a row. Landing spot makes a big difference, even a few inches in this case, although the type of ball (distance v premium) probably is the biggest difference.

Nice shots though!

I tee everything up as well, why wouldn't you?

Team pink castle for driver but 3 wood and hybrids/irons I'll usually scrounge around for a broken tee. Sometimes I remember to put a green castle tee in my pocket before the round but mainly it's just scavenging.

You could see the big bounce the third shot got, either landed in a firmer/level part of the green and probably had less spin as well. Great shot though, was nearly an awesome double bogey.
