I've been watching this. Incredibly moving hearing from the soldiers who actually fought in the First World War and the impact on the families that were left behind.
The dignity with which these people talk about their experience is humbling.

I agree with you.
I thought I knew quite a lot about WW1 but never quite realised the actual conditions some of these well known battles were fought in.
Strongly advise a catch up on IPlayer.m

My eyes were so full of tears when the man at the end of episode three read his poem to his fallen mate that I couldn't see.
I will try and watch it again when I can give it the concentration it deserves but I suspect the result will be the same.

I am going to be watching "They Shall Not Grow Old" on Sunday. Peter Jackson has taken WW1 footage and added colour to it. The results are staggering in terms of bringing the images to life.
Already got it set. Really looking forward to it. The Last Tommies has been powerful and emotional TV (arguably the type of stuff BBC do best but that's another debate and not for detracting this thread). So hard to watch and not feel emotion and the sense of loss these people have for their friends and comrades for so many years

Just started watching this on iPlayer. Riveting, and heart breaking at the same time. Can only imagine what they had to put up with, and the vast majority hadn't even reached 20 years of age.
Brave men indeed.
