Mentioned in another thread that I saw a bloke with SLOW written on the face of at least one of his irons (felt tip pen type thing)

Against any rule or not?
(and if so which one cos I cant find it in 4)

Thanks in advance

Can't see why it would be against the rules, it has no performance enhancing characteristic for the club. You can every write all over your glove for the same reason.

The R&A say

If a material or substance has been applied to the face in order to protect it or clean it, then it would probably be permitted provided all other Rules are satisfied. However, if the purpose of the application is to influence the movement of the ball or assist the player in making a stroke, it would be prohibited.

Thanks for this and while not doubting the quote in anyway, is this relating to design and manufacture only or does it apply to the player too?
And is a series of pen lines an application in the context of a material or substance?
I'm thinking that I can apply pen marks/lines to the grip/ball/glove etc all with the same purpose as the pen lines on a club face so what would the difference be?

edit: I just want to be thorough before I mention it to him discreetly as I'll probably bump into him tomorrow

This Rule applies when materials of a temporary nature have been applied to the face – such as saliva, grass juice, chalk, aerosol spray or similar substances.”
