The thing with tending the flag is that the person is standing near the hole for much longer than someone who is just walking up and picking the ball out.
I'm not sure I really understand all the objections to this practice. At our club we are requested not to attend the flag in friendly games. We respect this and mostly take the flag out. We do occasionally leave it in for long putts or to speed up play when necessary. There is of course NO penalty simply for putting with the flag in. In all the years we have done this at our club I can probably think of maybe a couple of times when someone has actually hit the flagstick with a long putt. However as we are playing a friendly 4BBB match between ourselves we wouldn't have to impose the penalty in any case.
If it saves even a small amount of wear and tear each time we all play, in a games between friends that otherwise, beyond a bit of banter or the odd quid, don't matter diddly-squat, then surely it's a sensible practice.
