• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

What do you think about when you are putting?

Doesnt matter how far away from the hole i leave my approach.... Im just thinking about holing it.... For me it narrows my focus to the hole rather than someone telling you putt to a manhole sized diameter around the hole....

I pick my line think of the hole as a clock face and pick a no. between 1-12 of where i think the break will take it into the hole.... Hasnt failed me yet...

Where I should stand for the next tee shots....

Really, just trying to take the putter back straight and then through straight.

I take a practice swing or two to get the rythm, get lined up, then move my eyes along the line to the hole, stare at the hole and putt. I never look at the ball whilst putting, always the hole.

I line up what I think is the correct line - and then switch the brain right off - I honestly don't think about anything while I putt - the body knows what to do as far as length is concerned so lag putts shouldn't be far away - anyone do the same

If I miss the first putt and leave it within 6 foot then I start thinking the worst and the pretty much guarantee that I'll miss it!
I always struggle with these putts.
Need to try and just get everything out of my head for these putts!

3 quick practice putts with eyes focused on a spot at the back of the hole.

Take stance eyes fixed on a point on the back of the ball but minds eye still on the point on the back of the hole.

hit it.

I only ever think of anything different if im trying to bed in a change. - I dont mess with my putting much though as it is normally fairly solid.

Really?! even if you are putting a 30 footer? i used to hustle at pool as a kid and used to look at my opponent when knocking balls in!

I am dont really think about anything as i want it to feel like second nature... Just tappa tappa tappa......

Yup always the hole unless I'm on a slope, in which case I have to look down to make sure I take the ball and not the ground.

If I get the pace of the green (which I usually do) my putting is always very strong. I love the long curly ones as I generally seem to get them close. It stems from when I played crown green bowls, you don't look at the ball or where you are going to drop it, you look at where you want it to finish up.

Yeh i can see the logic behind it, but for me, i would rather see that i am hitting it square and true, safe in the knowledge i have aimed and judged the weight right. horses for courses i suppose and putting being so individual, do what works best for you!

As it transpires, I think about a whole load of stuff, little of which has anything to do with golf or the act of putting itself.

In a 4 somes match on Saturday, my grand total of holed putts was one (after the match was over too)!!!!! From all of 6 feet.

Things that popped in to my mind included:

Council Tax
What was for tea
How low that aircraft was
What a stupid place to put a ball washer
£108m lottery winner
How poor quality the new Ping Hoofer bags are
Wish I brought my powacaddy
etc

I've always thought the same thing when stood over a putt "don't 3 putt, don't 3 putt, don't 3 putt".
You'd be amazed how rarely it works:p

nothing - maybe I should think about my previous golfing mixed foursomes playing partner (I always got great congrats from her when I holed a goodie so had an added incentive)

I know what you mean but once set up the swing should be a rhythm. I would hate to see the face coming in out of line and try to put it right. That'd likely cause more damage than good. I just wanna see where the ball is going and forget about the setup as that's done.
