Turnberry

The official reason it's not on the rota is poor infrastructure not who owns it.
If Trump was to sell it I bet that same infrastructure would no longer be a problem.
The opening of the Maybole by pass would certainly help the infrastructure.

I think the decision was made due to security costs, plenty folk would love to disrupt a Trump Turnberry Open

There are multiple non golf reasons why the Open won’t be there

Just look at the recent attack there for protests

He is one of the most high profile figure in the world and the event would become a target

And then not even touching on him being an egomaniac and ensuring the event was all about him

It’s a great course but never should the Open be at somewhere called “Trump”
There haven't been any issues with the Legends Tour playing at Trump International near Aberdeen, and there have even been rumours that the DP World Tour will go there on August 7th to 10th. If The Open went back to Turnberry, the circus would be caused by the idiots causing havoc protesting, not by Trump himself. There have also been no issues with LIV tournaments held at his courses either.

The legends tour doesn’t really have the same appeal or worldwide eyes than the Open would be

The Open is one of the biggest sporting events in the calender , its 250,000 people alone just going through the gates and then millions watching all over the world

It’s a perfect platform for something to happen

Yes, by idiot protesters, not by Trump or his family.

That’s because there is no point protesting at events no one is watching.

The PM can quite easily influence. People on the board of the R&A or whomever picks the venues can be tempted with other jobs, or have certain licences put up for "review" etc

Should the PM be involved, absolutely not. While sport can be used politically, thinking of the boycott of apartheid South Africa, going the other way, influencing decisions to improve trade deals with a very iffy leader is totally wrong.

Infrastructure is very important, I would love Saunton to hold the open, I personally think it's good enough especially if theu combined the East and West, but 250,000 people including a lot of Americans driving on the North Devon roads, plus no where near enough places to stay.

Never been to Turnberry, but if it has similar issues, there is just no logisitical way to do it

Absolutely zero chance he wouldn't make it all about himself given the profile of the event. It's seen by many as the most important Major on the calendar, Trump would be strutting about like a peacock if Turnberry held the event.

Do not underestimate just how big the ego of this raging narcissist is. Everything, and I mean everything has to be about him.

I disagree. I think others would make it all about Trump before he's done anything. He'd most certainly be there, but that would simply be enough for others to moan.

You must see a different Trump

there is no doubt he will make sure it’s about him
You don't think anybody would make a fuss before the event, before he's even done anything? And then he'll just turn up and they'll still moan, saying it's all about him for him just being there.

The thread is about golf though inevitable with a politician it is also about politics.

I would think that a majority of golfers worldwide whatever their views on Turnberry do not particularly want an Open at a course where there will be considerable protests and counter protests overshadowing the Sport.
However realistically the UK government is having to deal with an elected leader of the most powerful country in the world whose favours are of considerable economic and defense importance to the country.
I doubt they should really take a major consideration of the feelings of golfers about a golf tournament when balanced against the prosperity and safety of the Nation as a whole, whatever one's feelings about the Potus.

I think it's a shame that politics gets involved because Turnberry is/was the best course on The Open rota.

There will be issues all over the place

Security- protests and potential terrorists

And Trump himself using it as a platform

There isn’t one single non golf issue - it’s multiple and he is one of them

It’s also worth noting that it’s only held the Open 4 times

It’s not a venue that they have consistently played out anyway

Have you ever been to Sandwich?

I went to the open last time there

The train links were excellent as they extended the high speed trains down and we then crossed a bridge to a field which we walked over to get to the course

Like I say, he would be accused of using it as a platform, just for turning up before he's done anything else. Basically, anyone that dislikes him will just cause trouble. Like they did when they recently vandalised the course and like they did when his course opened in Aberdeen. Which makes the reason the R&A won't play at Turnberry not Trump himself, but the protesting idiots.

Why is it you think they would be protesting

Trump isn’t a universally liked person for many actions that he has done in the past

He isn’t some innocent bystander that people are just picking on - it’s not just because of some dislike they have

We can’t and won’t go into it because its political but we all know the issues

The point that a few have made is Trump himself will also make sure the event is about him - regardless of what others do

He is an egomaniac and the Open is a perfect platform for him

Trump is part of the issue
