Here's the scenario...

You've entered an Open competition. You meet the handicap criteria and your duly completed entry form goes in at least 4 months before the cut off date.
Due to over subscrition you are balloted out as you are one of the "higher" handicappers and find yourself on the reserve list.
So basically, a 7 handicapped golfer who has sat on his arse until the very last minute before sending his entry form in gets a place but you don't.
I could understand it if you fall outside the prescribed handicap limit. You were entering on a wing and a prayer anyway. But to meet all the qualifying criteria and then be balloted out despite putting in your application in plenty of time stinks in my opinion.
Surely if over subscribed they should ballot on first come first served as long as you are within the handicap limits?
Seems a much fairer way to me and wouldn't be difficult to administer. Just keep the forms in a folder in the order they are received, removing the ones from people whose handicaps are too high????
Thoughts?

PS Not happened to me by the way. I'm in. But a good friend of mine isn't.

It does seem a little unfair. I have seen some comps that actually state that they will do this on the booking form but if there was no mention of it then the ballot should include everyone. Personally I think once the comp is full any subsequent entries should get a polite letter saying it's full and they will go on the reserve list.

To be fair, it did state this on the entry form.
But I still think it stinks on the basis that his entry form went in months ago.
As I say, I think a much fairer way would be "first come, first served" if you fall within the handicap criteria.
If a mate of mine with a really low handicap had left his entry until the last minute and didn't get in, you could at least turn round and say to him "well I did warn you to get your entry in early"...in other words, you could justify it.
:( :( :( :( :(

What's unfair about it?

It's like saying Curry's should honour your 2 year warranty 2 months after it runs out..........the terms and conditions were clear to see on the entry form.

Get your handicap down chopper and you'll not be posting threads like this..... ;)

Read the thread!!! I'm in!
But I'm annoyed for my mate. He plays off 14 (max h'cap was 16), posted his entry off months ago and may have been bumped out by a 13 handicapper who sat on his arse and didn't post his applicaation in until last week.
I still say it stinks

Ah!!

Moral of the story....a)tell yer chopper pal to get HIS handicap down or b)tell him to enter later and he would be so hurt! ;)

Smiffy,I have been there and done it and I can't see what the issue is,it's tough sh1t,he/I wasn't good enough on this occasion and we knew there is was a ballot....tough titty.

Sorry Bob.
It doesn't work like that.
Get over it
:D :D :D :D :D :D ;)

I enter a lot of Opens and they have different criteria. Some are first come first served and others are balloted after entries close. Unfortunately its just how it is. Having a closing date works both ways though as in the past I have entered early and had the booking in my diary but due to circumstances changing i've had to cancel my entry. The club usually just rips up the cheque as they havnt banked them yet as they are waiting for the closing date before sorting through the entries.

Other times theyve already banked the money and had to raise me a cheque as theyve processed the application. I never believe i'm in until they produce the starting sheet and my names on it though. If its first come first served I will phone them before sending entry to make sure there are spaces left.

I would happily play against bob on 3/4 handicap...

I am travelling past Grantham in early Oct.. maybe I should swing by :D

Back to the thread, I agree with the rules on this one, I think the competition is only richer for it, for those competiting of course.

Our club also runs a stableford on the day for anyone not playing in the club champs so they can get a taste of it.

agreed, nothing 'unfair' about it at all, get over it and stop griping when things dont go your way (or your mates on this occasion).

Also play bob off square feet, I dont do handicaps with anyone lower than me, I give shots but I dont want 'charity' shots 'given' to me, it can only make me a better player

I'd say it's more annoying or exclusive or plain aggrevating, but not unfair. If it's in the Ts&Cs, you know when you're entering that it could happen, so not really unfair.

I think it's a shame when someone can enter just before the deadline and kick out someone who's been "in" for 4 months!

Errr....so you don't use your handcap then?
And you're suggesting I play a PGA pro off scratch?
:D :D :D

A) read the post again properly and
B) I didnt suggest you do anything
however I have a few thoughts
