We have main 2 matchplay comps, 1 singles and 1 4BBB, both have been played for over 80yrs and currently the rules are as follows.
Singles is 50% of the difference in Handicap and shots are given at start of match, ie, Player A off 6, Player B off 12, Player B starts match 3up and match is off scratch.
4BBB is 75% difference off lowest handicap, shots given on SI.
If tied after 18 holes singles continue playing off scratch.
But there is confusion over 4BBB if tied, some matches have played extra holes with no shots given, some have played extra holes with shots given in same same way as start of match.
Original rules have been lost, any thoughts?

The following is extracted from Appendix F of the CONGU manual - note the use of "must" in the first sentence:

Affiliated Clubs must use the following handicap allowances for the undernoted forms of competition when played as handicap events.


Match Play

Singles Full difference between the handicaps of theplayers


Four-ball Back marker to concede strokes to the other 3 players
(better ball) based on 90%of the difference between the full handicaps


Note 4: Hole-by-hole play-off (sudden-death). When extra holes are played in handicap competitions, strokes should be taken in accordance with the Handicap Stroke Index.

A club ask for advice on this very subject at the county AGM. The county were very polite in their response, "If you no longer wish to be an affiliated member to county and EG, you are at liberty to do what you want". :lol:

Time for clubs to play by the "written rules" and to stop making things up.

The only way to stop the clubs ignoring the basic HC rules is to remove their affiliation and also make the HC’s non Congu so the members no longer have official Handicaps

These aren’t new rules that have suddenly appeared , our club tried to change the Winter League Rules back to 3/4 - Captain said he wanted to exert his authority of looking after “all golf” and change the rules - had to stand up to him to politely inform he doesn’t have the authority over Congu

Also heard plenty of times “ we are a private members club - we can do what we want”

Unfortunatly to many county committees still have to many members from the old "private members club" and don't exert the necessary pressure on clubs that they know are blatantly doing their own thing.

I agree with the sentiment and appreciate the new WHS will ensure most singles competitions have to conform. However, why would a non-qualifying competition like these cause so much angst? Clubs play Texas Scrambles and three club comps without hassle from the county or congu.

Both of them are not recognised formats within the Congu regulations - if playing recognised Handicap Competitions then they most follow the rules set out by Congu.

Glad I do not have to play in your singles comps. Never played like that before, but it sure feels like it favours a high handicapper. Imagine starting a game 9 down.

My thoughts are simple, if the original rules have been lost write new ones.

This gives the opportunity of writing new rules in accordance with CONGU rules.

HC strokes are given on holes because of the difficulty of the hole to allow equal play. The type of competion does not affect the difficulty of the hole.

Its is up to affiliated members (you) to contact county if you feel something is amiss.

No not at all... they are to be spread evenly over all 18 holes otherwise you could have the top 6 or so SI holes in the back 9 with the match being over before a player ever got the benefit of them. However relating SI directly to difficulty is a very common error.

Aw… com'on Paul someone must have it all on the back of a cig-box somewhere as I just love those kind of tradions

Why? Every qualfier in our Club is run in accordance CONGU rules, why does it need to change 2 comps in a club that affects absolutely no one else in the County or Country or World.
We’re not making things up, both of these comps were probably in place before CONGU, why shouldn’t clubs be able to play a competition at their club to their rules if it impacts no one else, were’s the harm or justification to threaten clubs?

This years 4 semi-finalists are off 12,14,18 and 12.
They are looked as fun and keep the memory of the names on the trophies alive.

Because your club has knowingly signed up to membership of CONGU and to abide by the CONGU regulations.
