Hi all,

I’ve searched throughout R&A handicap book and online and couldn’t find an answer to this, and other posts on this topic from last year didn’t seem definitive either..

In 4BBB you apply the 90% handicap allowance to the difference in course handicap between biggest and smallest, but is this course handicap a rounded number, or unrounded.

I will put an example below..

Based on course rating 70.2
Par 69
Slope 120

For ease, players A B and C have a handicap index of 10.0
Player D handicap index is 16.0

Example 1- Rounding just once

Players A, B & C have an unrounded course handicap of 11.8194

Player D has an unrounded course handicap of 18.1912

The difference between the two is 6.38, we then apply 90% and you have 5.7, which rounds up to 6 shots for Player D.

Example 2 - double rounding

Players A B & C course handicaps round up to 12

Player D’s course rounds down to 18.

The difference of 6 when you apply 90% is 5.4, which rounds down to 5 shots for Player D

Example 3 - double rounding again but only at the end

Players A, B & C have an unrounded course handicap of 11.8194

Player D has an unrounded course handicap of 18.1912

The difference between the two is 6.38, this rounds down 6.0. We then apply 90% and you have 5.4, which rounds which rounds down to 5 shots for Player D. Same result as example 2 here, but won’t be the case every time.

Can you advise which is correct?

Thanks in advance

Example 2 is correct, you take the rounded CH of each player then the shot allowance is 90% of the difference - the difference is rounded up or down (in your example 5.4 rounded down to 5).

Thank you,

But I thought WHS was trying to get away from double rounding?

Why would they round twice when you can use the exact number and get a more accurate difference between the two?

This is the definitive guidance document on these matters: WHS Guidance Document
Page 47 onwards for worked examples.

Differentials are only calculated to one decimal place. Using anything more than one decimal place in calculations after that is silly. Machines do not improve the precision.

It is much simpler to use the England Golf Mixed Tee Calculator - https://view.officeapps.live.com/op...kajU3JGwwJGgxODg0ODQzMjI0&wdOrigin=BROWSELINK
