Played my 1st comp of the year today.I was not intending to but friends put me down so that was that.I had not played since playing with Querty last weekend so it felt like a bit of a journey into the unknown although I did play solid last week.Played pretty well today but the par 5s which should be pick up holes cost me big time.
Left the course feeling a little deflated, the difference between finishing well and finishing bad makes such a difference to your mood after the round.
Had a real sour taste today on leaving the 18th as the last 3 holes should yield some birdie opportunity's,got myself into a great position with some textbook golf on the back 9 and then just let it slip and cost me the comp.
GROSS SCORES..
1st Par 4 Par
2nd Par 3 Par
3rd Par 4 Par

I know Homer.
Dont get me wrong I would have bitten your arm off if you had offered it me on the 1st tee but when you finish like that you cant help but feel like it was a great chance missed.
3 pars to finish would have won me the comp.
That pisses me off as well I have to shoot -3 gross nett 67 to win the comp and some guy off 21 who apparently only plays in comps in the winter to protect his h/cap when his h/cap cant go up or down because of winter rules, tees etc wins.

Ah well its all boding well for the season, were still playing off a lot of forward winter tees but I have been playing consistantly under par without playing a great deal.

In fact im starting to wonder whether practice is overated and just going out with a clear mind and playing is the way forward

Two 3-putts? you need a V-easy! (Commercial over)
I'm surprised you still remember the last 3 holes.
Focus on the positives and the textbook golf you did play.
Why fret about the last 3 holes, will fretting change them?
Dont worry, be happy (as the song goes)

The V easy wont help on these greens Bob.
Im hoping to be playing with Phil Kenyon next month so will get the lowdown on your invention.

Sat here now im pleased with the way I played and my score but walking off the last green was not like how you should feel leaving the course having shot -1.

If I had finished birdie, par for the same score your mindset is completly different leaving the course although you have shot the the same score.

That was the point I was trying to make really

12th Par 3 Birdie
13th Par 4 Birdie
14th Par 4 Birdie
15th Par 4 Birdie
16th Par 3 Bogey 3putt
17th Par 5 Bogey
18th Par 4 Par

What's that old saying .... "Pride before a fall"?

If I'd made 4 back-to-back birdies, I reckon I'd be unable to even hold a club. I'd probably 4-stabbed all the last 3 holes! :)

Chris Mc

I only shot a nett 69,SSS is 69 so no handicap change even if there could have been, thats not exactly willy waving.

If someone shot a nett 69 off 18 hcap you wouldnt have posted that, you would have said well done but its the same score. ;)

I understand how you feel, par 5s are pick ups for me quite frequently so for your standard I know how annoying it can be, but when 3 putting strikes at all for me, I'm gutted, so twice in a round would make me feel pretty bad.

I think I understand some of your feelings Alchemy, but still, its a very tasty round. ;)

I can also understand your disappointment.

I would have been p!$$£d off finishing like that.
As you say if you had changed a few scores around and finished birdie, par, same score, different finish. Come off feeling great not, what if...

I did back 9, 2 under on Thursday, really hacked off that I didn't take front 9 seriously. could have been on for a PB but started on temp greens because of frost and by the time I had reached the 9th, they were putting the flags on normal greens. Aaaagh!!!

The one thing that a low handicapper brings to this forum is a 'different' perspective.

That scorecard, would for me, be like scoring with all of Girls Aloud in one night!! (Not to all tastes, I understand!) But you get my point.

To Alchemy (who understandably has different expectations to some of us), this was a, understandably, slightly disappointing round. This is not "willy waving" but merely sharing his round of golf with us. It is no different to the 'I broke 100, 90, 80' type posts that we see regularly on here.

You may think that I'm just 'massaging' Alchemy, but as many of you know, we've had our share of 'disagreements'. But this time I'm willing to defend his post.

(I really should learn when to keep my mouth shut!!)

I wasn't actually trying to be provocative. Just a nod to the ability to shoot under par which even when I was capable of doing it was more than enough for me. I never use to worry about the ones that got away and would relish in the fact that I had beaten the course knowing full well I would have to shoot a course record week in week out to even trouble the prize giving ceremony as there would always be 40+ points or a nett 65 or lower.

Homer. What makes you think my post was aimed in your general direction? I was merely trying to put a more positive spin on it.

I know you and Alchemy have had a few tate 'r' tates, and this looked nothing like one!!

Anyway, I'm playing golf with you in 3 weeks, you think I'm going to create now!!?? ;)

That scorecard, would for me, be like scoring with all of Girls Aloud in one night!! (Not to all tastes, I understand!) But you get my point.

I'll take a 99 tomorrow morning, if you want to send them girls around.......

Time to send HID to the all-night Tesco.....in Glasgow.....

I totally agree with you here alchemy,

It's amazing how much just one bad finishing hole can alter your perspective.

A couple of weeks ago I played with a mate of mine in a 4bbb.
I needed to finish with a net birdie for us to win, and I couldn't have thrown my drive into a better position.
150 downhill to a receptive green, 9 iron.....shank OB!! Dropped a ball......shank OB. Picked up my bag and walked off bloody raging!!!!!

As said above, it is amazing how different two blokes expectations can be, I for one would be happy to get back to breaking 80 after my dose of the sh*nks, but hey, that is the nature of this queer game ;)

Thanks Hapless you got the spirit of my post spot on and I have no problem with homer here.

Chris Mc was my only little gripe.

All you guys are capable of hitting a nett 69 and better, for me a nett 69 has to be a 71 gross because of my handicap.

Let me assure you if I have a good round I want to share it with the forum like everyone else does but I will also share a bad round as well and my thoughts on what I thought went wrong.Theres plenty of them!

It was only after getting home, doing the family thing and getting the kids to bed that it dawned on me that I dont think I have ever made 4 birdies on the bounce before so thats the major positive that will be in my thoughts as I shut my eyes on the pillow tonight. :)

In fact im starting to wonder whether practice is overated and just going out with a clear mind and playing is the way forward

I've been thinking the same for year's. I know loads of guys who put in the time but never seem to get any better!

It's amazing how much just one bad finishing hole can alter your perspective.

I played poorly today, capped it by smacking two OB off the tee on 18. I wandered into the trees whilst my partners played down and found 11 (count 'em, 11!) balls in there, including my two. So I finished on a positive! :)
