Yesterday was a board competition at our club, full handicap Stableford. Been playing pretty well recently and felt confident of posting a good score that would threaten the top of the leaderboard as well as get me a cut (15 HC is the target by the end of the summer)

I'll cut a long story short, considering I'm an 18 handicapper, I had a RIP, through 11 holes.....3 blobs and 4 1 point holes on the other 7 left me with somewhat of a bitter taste in my mouth. 4 points through 7 of the holes would normally mean that you aren't posting a good score......I handed in 37 points.

Poxy bloody game.

That is some recovery!

It wasn't even a recovery, there were just random crappy holes in there, started off with a double bogey and a bogey, then went through the next 6 holes +1, then I blobbed the 9th which I put down to the 4 foot snake doing the rounds. I then birdied the 10th, had a nice up and down for par on the 11th, blobbed 12 and 13...you get the picture.

I should have been over the moon with 37 points but in truth I was gutted.

Take the positives you know what you can do over 11 maybe even 15 (33/37) points and just work on concentration like us all to get that consistency to do it over 18. Some great golf in parts!

It'll come, i know. Just annoying that in the last 8 weeks and however many rounds of golf, I've played under handicap all but once and the one over handicap was 35 points, this Saturday I played in the Saturday swindle and they immediately cut me to 15, never played off 15 before, shot 38 points!

The CCS usually goes to 69 sometimes 68, par 71. So I'm posting good scores but not getting cut.

Weird stuff happens in golf. I try not to read too much into things.

For example, I always said if I scored 18 straight bogeys I'd leave my clubs in the locker room with a "for sale, money to charity" and never play again.

So, today stood on the hardest hole on the course (no.14) I'm 13 over par with 13 straight bogeys. Thinking about my "promise" I thought ... NO! I don't want to quit. Bring it on! I never par the 14th, but hey, there's still the 15th - 18th to save my round.

...which I did...and played the last 5 almost perfectly.

I've thrown away being under par (gross) on the 5th or 6th tee and not make 36 points.
I've also made 9 points on the front and 27 on the back.

Best not to think about it too much.

Good finish b/t/w. :)

I once played with a four handicapper in a comp and he, being three over on the sixteenth tee, missed the green with his approach shot.
He picked up, walked in and by the time we arrived at the eighteenth green he had sold his clubs, shoes, and bag and never played again!!

I have heard the threats but this was the real deal - no warning - just action!

At least it wasn't medal.

Mine was, and I n/r on the first hole.

You should just score NR on the first hole and then carry on. Your card can still be used for h/cap purposes as the NR just counts a a net double bogie... so if you go on to shoot 17 decent holes you'll still get a massive cut. Of course you can't win the comp but then who cares about winning? :p

I did, and buffered.

Is that a grass snake or adder. We've a few adders on the loose at my place at the moment

Everyone was saying it was an Adder but having looked about on eBay I'm pretty confident that it's a grass snake...I don't care if it's a grass snake, adder or frigging anaconda....I would run a mile if I saw it anywhere near me.

Yes but you got 37 points and presumably a small cut?

My medal round yesterday I was under Handicap till the last hole - bunkered my approach, left it in the bunker, thinned it out and 3 putted for a 7 (par 4) - ended scoring on handicap and no cut - try that for infuriating.!!

Think that says more about the person rather than the game. What i'd give to being a) playing off 4 and b) being +3 after 10 holes let alone 15.

I had a shocker on Formby's Par 3 course after work last night, from last playing it, going round 18 holes in +10 (+3 on the first 9) I lost about 12 balls and didn't even dare ask my playing partner what i'd scored. We were playing matchplay but recording scores as reference but i'd safely hazard a guess that i went round 9 holes in 50. I couldn't swing for toffee and it was a horrible feeling, still gutted about it today. I can bad again, it would be impossible. The life and times of a high handicap golfer i suppose...

BUT, i will be back in the saddle on Friday and am back out as soon as i can be. Golf is all about playing yourself and the course/elements, your opponent second. Mental strength is a huge part of the game and one that I relish.
