Well he's already failed to coach their strikers well enough
I guess we do not know how Ruud's views differ from ETH? Were they completely in agreement on everything, or did Ruud have opposing views in different areas?

There'll be things that work in his favour from already being at the club for a while. There will be things that go against him from being part of the staff up to now.

Maybe it’s time for Neville to step away from microphone and get into a tracksuit again

So many positives for many if that was to happen

They are realistically going to be looking at managers out of a job

So people like Southgate and Potter will be there , Xavi as well

I don’t think any of those will be the sort of manager to sort it all out

I’m hoping they don’t look at someone like Amorin

Whoever it is , it’s a massive job to turn it around - at least 2/3 years off players being shipped and replaced with players under a managers vision and ideas

We got lucky that Klopp was free and willing to take the job - it’s very hard to see who is around like that now

Sir David of Moyes is available and his contract from last time finally expired

Any suggestions Southgate should be considered, I have to check if it is 1st April.

The guy who was poor in club management, then was a laughing stock by most England fans in the end.

All this "he will bring the team together again" stuff is just nonsense. He did help generate a good morale with the England camp, in the early days at least. Not hard when many consider you the best, or one of the best sides internationally. Not hard when more that half of the games you play should be walkover wins. Not hard when you only see the players once every 3 months. Not hard when, after you do finally lose a big game, you are out of the tournament. If England had to play, home and away every year, France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, etc every year, the players might not be that supportive of Southgate if they were being beat frequently.

How will Southgate do when he needs to manage a squad of players every day. Manage those he doesn't start games. And, if he takes over Man Utd, the players are not amongst the best squad of players amongst their peers, not like England were. Sure, players might be all friendly with the manager at the start. But, when they lose a game against Brentford and maybe the next week against Palace, just how good will morale be then. Will the players support the manager, or see the manager as the reason for their failures rather than themselves. Southgate would be an easy target, he isn't exactly Pep.

If Southgate gets the job, I'll obviously want him to do well. But, I will struggle to defend him when everyone else in here are taking pleasure in mocking him

New manager bounce under Van Nistelrooy, a run of good results, he gets a permanent contract, there's a steep decline in his second season, he's gone by the following summer. I've seen this movie before. No point changing the manager unless you can get a really elite replacement.

Not much surprises me these days, unless Gerrard gets it.

But, the key question for you: if Southgate got the job, would you back it as the correct decision in your opinion? Or would you be rolling around laughing like a lot of other people?
He is nowhere near good enough for a team that’s looking to challenge for titles and CL etc

But he may well be the manager for a team that’s just sliding backwards and could stop that slide , rebuilt and steady the ship mid table and put in some foundations for a manager to move the club back into the top 6

Not seen much football this weekend but have seen the West Ham penalty and that is a shocking decision from VAR. I feel for EtH losing his job off the back of that result although it was coming. Manchester United now have a couple of games and an international break to find the right man. They cant afford to get this appointment horribly wrong as they have in recent seasons.

So, Man Utd should seek a manager that can help them to stable 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th position in the league for a few years.

ETH was doing that.

What wonderful ambition

Around about 14th now and going backwards , have gone backwards in each of ETH seasons with no idea on what style the team has played

You have tried established trophy winners and it’s not worked, tried the old boy returning and not worked and tried the up and coming manager from abroad and it’s not worked

So maybe a Southgate or a Potter to steady and build a stronger foundation is needed

The team is miles away from being a top 6 team , maybe it needs a different approach

What sort of manager do you see the club attracting right now

Maybe it’s time to take a step back to see that United right now isn’t the club it once was and may struggle to attract any big name manager and the likes of Southgate is the area you can shop in
