The all things EV chat thread

That’s fair comment, although any problems they have now are due to the added tech rather that the fundamental internal combustion engine… I was massively frustrated by the inability to even tow the bloody thing home. Also it seems the lack of technicians that can work on EVs is a real problem in the industry. Give me a 2.0L diesel that I can tow, bump start and will be good for 250,000 miles. 😁
So ICE cars don't catch fire?
I don't know why you can't tow an EV home or even jump start an EV

And if you want to keep a car for 250,000 miles, that's over 20 years

EVs do not a neutral gear so cannot be towed in the same way as a normal car as it can seriously damage the engine. Easiest way to move them is on a flatbed which are not always sent by the breakdown service.

This is exactly what the RAC guy who came to me when I broke down said, also it was a 4 hour wait for the flatbed so he bodged a temporary repair to get me home… just! The thing was dying as I pulled onto my drive.

More research required
Yes, an electric vehicle (EV) can be towed, but it's best to use a flatbed truck to avoid damaging the battery and electric system, as most EVs do not have a neutral gear. Some manufacturers allow the vehicle to be towed with its wheels on the ground if a specific "neutral" or "towing" mode is enabled, but it is essential to check your owner's manual for your specific model.

Most, if not all, internet articles say the same thing.

The towing issue is one that affects many ICE cars with EPBs nowadays. If an ICE develops an electrical fault in many cases the parking brake can’t be disengaged. There are manual overrides on some but it’s like the Krypton Factor trying to work it out.

Happened to my mate’s wife’s Velar. Battery fault caused it to die, EPB was stuck on. Couldn’t be towed and they even struggled to get it on a flatbed due to its weight.

Far too many aspects of cars are now controlled by software and electronics.
It's about time laws were passed to mandate that for safety reasons various items on a car must be mechanically connected to the devices they control:
  • Brake pedal
  • Steering wheel
  • Door handles
  • And there must be a mechanical way to disengage the transmission so that a broken down car can be pushed out of danger's way.
It isn't exclusively an EV issue; some ICE cars are also affected. But EVs seem to be at the forefront of this race towards software control of everything.

I'm not saying it didn't happen, it was done on purpose to make EVs look bad.
Even when the Model S shows 0%, it still has 10-20 miles left of range.
The driver would have had many warnings about low battery and the car would have switched to limp mode.
And to say that the driver ignored all these warnings and the 48 superchargers in the car park because he/she was stupid just doesn't make sense.

So you’re saying that someone deliberately caused 3 hours worth of queues and that much hassle to make EVs look bad 😂😂😂😂😂

Someone causing 3 hours of issues isn’t my reason for not getting an EV

Have you any proof that it’s a hoax ? Or been done deliberately

So when people run out of fuel do you think they are doing that deliberately as well
Option a
The driver didn't see all the dash warnings or the 48 150 kwh superchargers in the car park and had been driving around on 0% range.

Option b
Ran out of charge deliberately to show a perceived weekness in Teslas even though the Tesla in question has up to 400 miles of range and if it was a 2017 model, it could have free supercharging for life.

The ICE equivalent would be driving with the fuel guage showing empty for 20 miles and driving past a petrol station
