The all things EV chat thread

Can anyone drive into your golf club and charge for free?

(Speed is 3kwh so not the fastest, about 5% an hour on mine)

With this adapter yes anyone who chooses can, however it's not on the website that we have EV chargers nor on zap map I believe so many wouldn't

Still talks of them going to fast chargers then putting them online for people to navigate to and use the clubhouse for a pitstop

Anyone who has an EV , the tax brackets change this month for them..if you go onto the DVLA tax website from today until end of march ..

Just enter your reg, your v5 number and click ok. Ignore where it says "warning this vehicle is already taxed you may be charged" as it's still £0 ATM you will then extend your tax free to renew march 2026 instead of whatever month it was before .. just kicks that can down the road slightly

I don’t even know if it applied to an electric motorcycle/scoter, but just did it just in case

Not sure myself. I just saw this on a FB group I'm in and did it. Both mine and the wife's car align their tax now. I got 2 extra months tax free she got 1 extra month.

Nothing in the scheme of things just thought I'd share for everyone to use.. does help slightly as I pay insurance in one go and that's due same time as the tax so just pushes them apart slightly

Some impressive numbers coming from BYD
All very impressive technically, but...
1. How many 1MW chargers are we likely to see appear in the UK?
2. Given that ultra rapid charging costs more per mile petrol, the potential charging speed is kind of irrelevant.

EVs have got way too high end and full of unnecessary tech. At least some low cost small ones are beginning to appear. Hopefully that is the start of a sensible rethink by the manufacturers.

Why? People like big cars. SUVs don’t sell as well as they do for no reason. Even “mid size” family cars are bigger than of old.

People also like tech. But as for in-necessary that complaint can be levelled at any car. The new iDrive9 is terrible and dangerous IMO as it’s all housed in onscreen menus. And it’s across the whole range regardless of power source.

But BYD also have the low-cost small segment in mind to with the Dolphin. But the Atto 3 (their answer to the Kia Niro or Hyundai Kona) outsells both the Dolphin and Seal models combined on figures I saw the other week.

Some people want small, simple, compact but I’d hazard they are in the minority these days.

Thanks for that as a reminder. I was gong to SORN my car and Retax it.

Just seen this , if of any use to owners on here:

EV owners are exempt from paying car tax until April 2025 – but you can delay paying it for another year

Up until now, another benefit of EVs is that they've been totally exempt from road tax, or vehicle excise duty – but this will end in April 2025 (though we've a trick to get another year for free). While EVs are currently still zero-rated for vehicle tax, it's important to note that you MUST still tax your vehicle, even though you won't actually pay anything.

Get FREE tax for an extra year on your EV

If your EV was first registered on or after 1 April 2017, make sure you re-tax it in March 2025 (it can be anytime BEFORE 1 April 2025, but to maximise the savings you should do it in March). Doing this means you'll push back the deadline for paying tax on your EV to when it's next due for renewal in March 2026 (assuming you renew in March 2025).

It doesn't matter what month your EV expires, you can re-tax it anytime using your car's registration number and the reference number on your V5C Registration certificate (logbook) printed in your name. The Government website will ask "Are you sure?" to which you just click to accept.

Have you all seen the Mark Rober video, driving a Tesla towards a painted wall like the Road Runner cartoons? Testing full self drive based on the camera system versus lidar on another car.

The missus is now window shopping for cars as well. She saw a green one she quite liked at the swimming pool. Didn’t help much, I needed more information. It had 2 letters. VW? No, wasn’t it. It was more luxury than that. Maybe she miscounted, maybe a BYD? No, something with a G in it.
So I worked out that she liked the LUXURY car called MG4. Standards ;-)
Where I work all area managers drive them, the one I talk to regularly calls it her Trophy. She confuses the trim level with the brand and model.

I kind of like the MG ZSEV, but that doesn’t come in that nice green. And apparently MGs can be bricked by using Gridserve? Would be awful not to be able to use the best network (outside Tesla).

At the moment I keep tabs on the Skoda Enyak and the Kia Niro developments. Once we remortgaged we can think about a move towards EV

My daughter's ZSEV was indeed bricked by a Gridserve charger. Had to be lowloaded back to the MG dealer who fixed it with a software update.

Apparently it was a known issue - but MG hadn't bothered to recall the car for the simple fix, instead leaving it until it actually happened, so she got stranded and missed her cousin's wedding. Inexcusable.

Check out the EV3 from Kia. Cracking car. I have the niro EV I love it.

Good review in that video , starts from 33k which is reasonable in brand new car costs but does 375 miles to a charge which is very good for that price range

Boots massive aswell

I'm hoping by the time i come to change the ev5 is out as this is slightly smaller than my niro inside so we need more space by then not less

He's received a fair amount of flak for this video as he's not use Autopilot correctly so the results are a complete waste of time.

This is one of the response videos...
