The all things EV chat thread

Apologies misread that. Thought it was money being invested by the govt into roadside charging.
It is but indirectly.

I was looking at electricity providers but could only find one price, no off peak tariffs? Is this correct ? I tried 2 market search engines and they both gave the same situation.
I also noticed they have early exit penalties? These are looking like phone contracts ! They don’t provide any equipment for you to pay on the drip .. and don’t say smart meter because that’s for their benefit.
They don't tend to come up on the comparison engines but there is usually an article or similar summarising if you look about
I.e.

Thank you, I have OVO and it was their smart tariff but the issue was it wasn’t charging on demand or to the level requested.
So if I needed 200 miles range the next morning, it would tell me it had stopped and the car will be charged to my required range 2 days later..
So now I am looking for an off and on peak tariff.

There are plenty of very good EV tariffs, but all will require a smart meter.

Octopus go

Not intelligent go

Or eon drive

Flat 5 or 7 hour night rates

.

I think go also needs a smart meter as it needs to know how much you used. i don't really get the objection to them anyway

The way I read his post was he meant smart charging rather than a smart meter (I could be wrong but that's how it sounded piecing together with later post about just wanting hours not when they want to charge)

I don’t mind them but I don’t understand the exit payment though

Exit fees have been around for ages with energy companies though as they buy their energy in advance and price accordingly (well did) I believe that was always the reason they peddled

Octopus go I don't believe has a exit clause but it's not fixed anymore it's variable

Eon drive is fixed for a year with day rates the same as normal by looks where as octopus go is slightly higher day rate

Personally I'm on intelligent octopus (which I appreciate isn't what you want) it's variable now but because I have a home battery I stay on it as they muck around with the day rate not the night rate so the effect on me is very minor

I will have a look at both tariffs I was getting to the point where I was questioning the point of a battery.. it always made sense to me to start with a battery and charge it up at a low rate and use over the high rate period. But if that was not possible then you would need to have a solar array first then battery..
I guess I am becoming quite pessimistic about all of this and the electric suppliers are basically making it too expensive.. I need to look at the schemes as well but I am sure that there is a catch .. (trust no one - x files 😳🤭)

Please refresh my memory, I think you have said before.
Is this because of the make of charger you have?
I have OVO and an Ohme charger and use OVOs 'charge anytime' and have never experienced this problem.

I have a hypervolt and BMW iX3, I adjusted both removed and added and it was related to OVO. Once I dropped off their smart tariff my car got charged to the level I wanted on demand.
They could not understand that when I plugged the car in I wanted it charged not just tethered to the wall. My view is that I wanted it charged and to charge the car in one go, not do individual top ups sporadically of 2-5% as I see that potentially damaging the battery. I see OVO completely undoing a major EV benefit of having range in a car ready for the next day.
Suffice to say I think OVO are complete “bankers” but I don’t think they are the only ones.. Scottish Power are the same, tried to call them but they said it was a 4 hr waiting time for an operator, I cancelled the direct debit and they called me. Privatisation is utter pants, without control .. none of this lot are competing

Well today marks the end of a year tracking the charging costs for both our EVs

My Kia has done 12079 miles and My wife's Kona has managed a massive 947 miles

My home charging costs £45.54
My away from home charging costs £91.71

1.13p per mile

Wife's home charging costs £24.15
She only charged at home

2.55p per mile

Now mine gets skewed by free charging at golf and other places. So add £20 a month to that to cover the charges I would do at home

So my £137 year cost adding in £20 per month comes to £377 a year. £31.50 a month to drive 1000 miles a month .

I won't be tracking next year I just was interested to see an actual year

Can anyone drive into your golf club and charge for free?
