Remind me what EV do you have? Is it a big heavy thing?
2.4 miles/kWh in "efficient mode" sounds shocking. I thought EVs were supposed to do about 3.5 - 4 miles/kWh.

Efficient mode is a bit of a con, only turns the heating down and holds back the throttle for a few extra miles

2.4kw is ok for this time of year at motorway speeds

In summer your closer to 3.5

Depends on the car ofc

Did 330 miles drive on Saturday to Edinburgh and back 95% motorway at 70mph heating on 20 degrees heated seats and steering wheel on in my Tesla model 3. Temperature was from -3 to 4 degrees average consumption was 4miles to kw.
In just over a year I did 26k in it and my average consumption is 230 wats to a mile.

You will learn to go by % and what you know that % can do rather than the guess o meter. It's poor

It will work that out on the temp now . But when you get driving it's more efficient when it warms up etc

Same with the heater myth, the range does drop when you put the heater on.. but that's because for that moment whilst it gets to heat it's using a lot more energy and the guess o meter says right if you use this like this your miles will drop. However once up to temp the energy drops right down and your miles return

Much like a washing machine will spike up the kWh usage when it's heating up but doesn't use that

I completely ignore how many miles it tells me I have left .. I go by 170 miles summer 140 winter

Plus the grazing charging means Ive always got minimum 100 miles whatever the weather

Tesla only give % they don't do miles to go because the computers keep changing

Out of curiosity, when did that change?

I only ask because all the Teslas I have delivered have had an option to display remaining charge in miles OR %. I’m pretty sure I’ve driven a 22 plate within the last few months so any change must be very recent.

Have edited the comment it seems the article I read was about one model

That's one thing I defo won't miss about my Corsa I have no % option, the later models do but mine doesn't , it's a complete pain

I am enjoying your honest real life experience’s with your EV…Refreshing not to have any confirmation bias for a change… please keep them coming. 👍

I might have missed it earlier in the thread, but what is the manufacturers claimed mileage for your car? I'm guessing it's over 172 miles?

If my memory is correct his battery is 105kw usable and claims it can do 325 miles .. that would be unacceptable drop off in winter

I mean mine claims 200 but in reality as I said 170 summer 140 winter which is acceptable but 175 isn't good id expect 200 plus minimum

The big tradition manufacturers are losing ground on EVs because their claimed milage doesn't live up compared to the Nissan's, kias , Hyundai , mg brands

Just as an addition to my last post my new Kia that's on the way claims 287 miles to a charge , the reviews say 250 real world , winter 200

The battery in that is 64.8kw usable compared to 105kw

People don't like Elon but his teslas do what they say in the main, because they have been built as EVs from ground up and not excisting manufacturers playing catch up

I'm not sure that I'd call 15% less than the claimed mileage in summer and 30% less in winter "acceptable". Would be interested to see how that stacks up against ICE vehicles with the claimed versus actual ranges. Obviously driving style will affect the range achieved but 30% less range in winter for your car seems like the manufacturer's ego is writing cheques that their cars can't cash.

Whilst it is partly ego writing cheques it's also science though, even normal cars reduce range in the winter

It's just that because the tanks "batteries" hold more the drop is far less noticeable

This is what makes the Fisker interesting.

And there are lots of videos popping up about BYU, but I haven’t yet watched any of them yet. Headlines like Tesla killer are putting me off.
I wouldn’t want to give Elon any money, but what he has done for the EV push is good for the industry, in my opinion.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of Elon himself but for example the powerwall battery is brilliant. It's one of the few with built in island tech so I can use it in a powercut without extra work

Same with his cars he has pushed the industry to improve

Nissan deserve a lot of credit aswell

In 2012 I had to do EV research for a marketing paper. BMW were sponsoring the Olympics with the i8, we had to simulate a rollout.

There were few competitors to research, Tesla wasn’t on the radar. BMW, Nissan (leaf), and a couple of others (Toyota maybe?) had a head start. There were about 5 cars if I remember correctly. That’s just over 11 years ago.
