For those concerned about the fire risk, how many car fires did you see in 2023 ‘v’ the number of cars you saw. And of those on fire, how many of them were hybrids/EV’s?

You‘re splitting hairs over something that’s minuscule anyway.

Slime told the story of his friend (Post no. 4420) who won't park his EV Jag in his garage because it might catch fire, so that shows that even among EV owners, some believe there is a higher risk of their EV catching fire. The truth is Slime's friend is more at risk from his ICE car catching fire which he does park in his garage.

It's fine when it catches fire his EV will be safe and sound 🙂

There is fire risk with everything, put it this way. Insurance companies love increasing your risk base on anything they can.. I have solar and a telsa house battery .. it did not increase the cost of my insurance because of that, infact you don't even have to declare them .. you would think if something was a risk enough to be worried about it would need to be declared. (Had to tell them when installed and they confirmed it's covered at no cost and don't declare on insurance now auto covered)

Risk in gas boilers is low but it's a risk.

Charging your phone overnight is a risk

Putting the tumble and washing on overnight is a risk

Walking across the road is a risk

If we start to analyse the risk in every situation we certainly wouldn't play golf.. all those balls flying around risking hitting us on the head.

Perhaps people look at the number of fires in homes started by electric scooters charging and correlate electrical scooter charging and EV chatging. At the end of the day, it's still electricity charging a lithium battery, and at a reasonable current as well.

At the end of the day, all the evidence shows that EVs are less likely to catch fire than ICE cars.
If someone can prove me wrong, fine, I will admit I'm wrong.

Charging an EV is expensive and time consuming

Just lost my EV charging virginity... was down to 39% and therefore decided to get some juice. Our supermarket shows that it has 6 charging stations ( 4 of which are obstructed) - but is the only fast charger nearby. So off i went to seek the holy grail. I have Electorvese and a BMW charge card (which uses Ionicity and BP pulse). Left the house around 11:30, drove past the petrol garage!!. As expected the supermarket one was in use, so parked in the next bay and waited. And waited and waited. Went inside, dropped off some dry cleaning stuff and came back to resume my wait.

Kept looking for other stations in the neighborhood. I know that our town center's multi-storey car park has chargers. So decided to head there. The queues to get in there were a mile long, so abandoned that.

Finally found a fast charger in an office complex. So drove there to find 9 EVBox chargers sitting idle. Unfortunately, it wont accept Electroverse app and needs either a EVBox App or a charge card. Luckily, i had my BMW Charge card. So presto, it allowed me to charge.

At 12:20, I plugged it into a CCS and lo and behold it was a 40kwh one (even though it said 29KwH). The car display said, 80% by 1:18... 1 hour of sitting around. So walked down to our town centre. I never go there - dont like getting stabbed. Enjoyed a coffee, then went and saw the decorations. Went into Waterstones and bought a real book - for reading when i charge next. At about 1:05, the App notified me that the car has hit 80% and unlocked the cable. So scrambled back. Tried to increase target from 80% to 90% (just in case it can get some extra juice - but the car wont do that). Got home for about 1:30. Now the car can do about 180miles on it. The app would not tell me how much it will cost me, other than saying that i put 32KwH

In summary:
Total time to refuel >> 2 hours
Total cost>> 3.95 coffee, £12.99 book and whatever EVBox will charge me.
Plenty of squeaky bum and anxiety trying to figure it out.

Welcome to the world of EVs

To give you a rough idea of cost most CCS chargers I have seen in my short period of having electric are around 80p per KWh compared to 29p for house hold standard and around 8p if you have a dedicated charger and use the right supplier.
zapmap usually tells you the suppliers charges

The charger that comes with my car plugs in to the mains and is 2.2KW so is good enough for an overnight top up rather than a full charge.

So let me rephrase:
You have a diesel that only does 42mpg? What is it - a bus? :ROFLMAO:
I only used to get around 50mpg from my diesel Peugeot 308 est. I suppose it comes down to how you drive and the sort of journeys you make. Most of mine were either short distance around town or high speed dual carriageway motorway driving.

I think the figures need to be broken down further to be of any real use and to decide if Slime's friend is being sensible or not. I would assume that most fires in ICE cars are while being driven and most fires in EVs are while they are being charged (no idea if that's true or not and is based on nothing more than supposition and guess work). If that's correct then Slime's friend is being sensible as the ICE vehicle is less likely to catch fire in the garage while parked than the EV while being charged.

As @Hobbit rightly pointed out we are just going down the rabbit hole of 0.015747575% of risk compared to 0.01746464% or risk

My EV is parked and charged nearest the road, just because it's the most used car in and out so goes easiest space to leave the house

When it's summer and the big car is most used for family days out I move and charge it under the window

I feel not one bit less safe, even tho it's next to the air con unit which contains flammable gas ..

Sometimes you just got to stop worrying about what 0.27272% you really care about
