Played in our Masters event today. 36 holes medal and its invite only for competition winners over the last 12 months. Had a nightmare firts round and my front nine this afternoon wasn't great. From nowhere I rattled off 6 straight pars on the back nine and was making par putts from 6-15 feet with ease. Just to prove that the real Homer was alive I doubled 16 with a super 3 putt but got up and down at 17 for par. Just to make my day though I decided to chuck another double in.

The point is, I was playing mediocre at best and whenever I did anything to claw myself back I'd throw it all away again and suddenly I can put a par run like that together. Doesn't it frustrate the hell out of you!

Just as well you had that free lesson yesterday or imagine what might have happened! :D

Another post and another dig - life must get pretty boring when I'm not around. Even I'm not mad enough to try and implement a swing change 24 hours before a 36 hole medal. At least I've got some pointers going forward though.

Oh Homer, I have been crying into my beer all weekend, what a damn stupid game. On Friday I was invited to a well known oil company’s golf day. I have been looking forward to it for six months. It was nine holes of Texas scramble; I was playing with a 11, 6 & 23 handicap. We were 2 under after 9 the winners were 3 under. In the afternoon it was 18 holes of stableford on the tightest 18 holes I have ever seen. I was hitting the ball as sweetly as I ever have and making pars and bogies. In the last 5 holes I lost total confidence in my swing and with the loss of confidence I lose my swing too. From striking better than ever to not having a swing.

Onto Sunday, the men’s medal and my first competition at my club to cut a long story short I was all over it, at home, swing back, keeping up or playing better than my 13 handicap partners. All I wanted from the day was to make a good account of myself. Par my way round to the 5th where I was at the front edge of a medium par four for 2. I ended up with a 10. I thinned my 60* over the green then back over to where I started then back over the back, then back to the front into the bunker then out and down. I turned to the guys and said I was so so sorry. Of course they were not bothered at all. I shook it off and got back to paring, better pars, quality shots, lots of praise. Got to the 17th par 3 it took me 3 balls to get one in play, one putted it for an 8. Game over 102 with a 10 and 8 and a 7. I played 15 good holes and some awesome shots, but it means nothing to me as I feel I let myself down. I want to through my clubs out of a moving car but I know I have to go back to the range and get back on with my program. STUPID GAME. I want this so bad but this weekend was a blow and has taken the wind out of my sails.

Which begs the question...

If you can remember enough about the swing changes you were shown to be able to implement them at sometime in the future, why the hell can't you remember everything else you've been shown in the past????
:D :D :D :D :D :D

Alex, just one question.
If you were at the front edge of a green, why did you use a 60 deg wedge?

the green is very well guarded by bunkers, i wanted to fly it... on the other side the grass is long so now way to bump and run.

A forum member and new friend lent me 3 wedges, uptill now I have only used my sand wedge from my set. I am having a hard time with these wedges but sometimes they are great. Think I should go back to what I know or move forward with the wedges? open question I know.

just try and remember the good holes and a little course management on the others will bring your h/cap down,it happens to everyone, you just have to shrug it off and get back out there.

ye, thanks alot, I have been saying this to people for years and need to remember it. the good shots these days are worth nothing to me less they hit the bottom of the cup. I think I am taking it all too seriously. Need to give myself a damn good talking to. Nice to let off steam on the forum though. Just got a call from my father to tell me to pick my Bday gift up from AG today so better stop my crying.

Silly even for you Smiffy. Surely you can see the logic in not making any changes the day before an event. I can remember what I've been shown and work on them at the time and they normally bed in. However being a numpty and of limited ability I tend to always manage to undo the good work by resurrecting another long forgotten flaw.

Perhaps its just that I'm not as good as you Smiffy

I haven't played any round this year when I haven't left a minimum of 4 or 5 shots out there.

I don't mean 'wouldn't it have been nice if....' shots, I mean 'why the blinkin heck did you do that, you plank...' sort of stuff

But I always assumed everyone does that.

Take my last round. 33 points. Not too bad, off an 18 handicap. With 6 points coming over the last 5 holes.

But there were two drives soooo far into the trees. That's two lost balls, so four penalty shots - assume I'm not perfect, so on a good day I could save 2 of them.

Two three putts from simple two putt range. 2 more shots gone.

On 6 holes I took 3 to get down from the fringe, or within a foot of the fringe - assume 50% success should be achievable, that's another 3 shots I missed.

That's not including the heel shank on the 14th, or fatting my chip on the 18th into a bunker, or all those other genuine stupid shots I wasted.

That's just 7 simple shots I should be able to save myself pretty much every time.

Funny how I can do that every single time I go out there, and never actually score the way my brain says I should.

My brain says I should be a 14 handicapper. My scores say I'm lucky to be where I am.

But then, if I did all that, and scored what I expected, what would I have to strive for ?

Don't tell me... a 64 deg  ;)

hehe.. no, an 08 TM Burner 3 wood. great price atm. I would rather the super fast but under £90 for the 08 makes it a better buy and it will sit nice with my 08 burner hybirds.

I got rid of my blob wedge earlier in the year (over my knee actually). I'm pleased to find that with a 56 degree wedge in my hand I'm now chunking my pitches just a tad further than I used to.
