Standard of people trying to make it Pro....

Of course, with +2 or +3 you might not be good enough to _make_ it on tour, but I think, at that point you cannot go much further without turning pro. You can only learn to play tour pro level golf by actually playing out there with the big boys (or girls). Yes, quite a few young players will find out that they don't have what it takes that way, but if they don't try, they will never find out. You cannot wait it out as an amateur, hoping to go lower and lower in handicap and then at some point jumping directly into making big money. It's not how it works. Someone like Tiger or, in the female game, Lydia Ko, who already get a chance to play PGA or LPGA events as junior amateurs and hit the ground running, are exceptional talents with a huge stress on "exception". The others grind their way in through years of losing and missing cuts first on the smaller and then on the bigger tours ...

I've seen a number of players of a plus handicap who have considered going onto the feeder tours, having had a degree of success at a local level. None have ever progressed or made any money and they've all said that it's a real eye opener very early on how different it is. They were averaging 270-280 off the tee and hitting it to fifteen feet regularly. The guys making a crust and clearly having what it takes, at least at that level, were going out to 290 off the tee and sticking it to ten feet. Made them appreciate that while locally they may be reasonable, they were small fry in the bigger things and even the next step up is so hard

Looks like only a handful are breaking par at Frilford today
