Society oiks

I remember being amused when the Turnberry staff went into meltdown when the European Head of their hotel chain turned up at the range wearing jeans.
No one stopped him....says a lot!

Normally your points are spot on but suspect you're on a bit of a wind up with this one. Would you like to be stuck behind a group like that?

There are groups like that at every golf club regardless of the attire they wear and if they are a member of the golf club or society

A) They cant play golf
B) They had no etiquette
C) Off course manners were dire
D) They think they can turn up and play a quality course in a football shirt

I dont object to anybody playing golf at all, but if they are going to play a venue that a lot of people meticulously take care of they could at least learn the game, the rules, generally how to play golf, if they want to p**s about in there football shirts they can go down the local muni.

Why didn't you specify the above in your OP? You only mentioned 'D' in that. Was the rest merely an assumption/supposition?

Seems to me that the Club did attempt to come to an amicable arrangement. Perhaps its inability to specify/manage visitors, and their expectations, was actually a contributor to the 'demise' from being a 'desirable' club to apparently being less so - at least in the views of some.

You haven't changed my view on your 'snobbery' (note the aposts). Any Male-only clubs in your neck of the woods?

For an foreigner as me trying on dictionary to find out what oiks means? The dictionary cant recognize the term,,,so what does oiks means,,i guess society means more then a two or fourball playing?

Hope me and wife is welcome to play on UK clubs without being regarded as .......

If it helps you understand. Oiks are a bit like Vikings but without the boats and swords ;)

 thats not nice! In answer to you Foxholer I have no problem with woman playing golf and Lars you'll meet plenty of spiritual wurzel types in Devon, best stick to proper counties that the rest of the UK recognise.

Whilst working for an American owned business our multi millionaire owner turned up for a visit dressed in 'regular' US business attire... Denim jeans, checked shirt and baseball cap... Our operations manager had to reschedule lunch away from the nearby Grove...

Could someone be more of a golfing snob of they tried????? So you would prefer your membership fee to be a lot higher to keep the running of your club above water - then we'll all be here discussing (well i'd be laughing and having a good read) at how costly your membership fees were/are!

Good contradiction in your quote "I don't object to anybody playing golf at all" providing:
A) They CAN play golf
B) They have etiquette as all golfers have this in abundance (I now see what a fantastic club you are a member of as nobody is ignorant, holds up others with slow play, and you're all round brilliant gentlemen)
C) Act like proper gentlemen for the whole day with proper use of 'please' and 'thankyou' - after all manners cost nothing
D) Have amazing powers of telepathy to understand what is required at a place they don't go to regularly - If the club hasn't communicated the exact requirements for your dress code, and the customers are willing to pay the going price to share your hallowed turf with yourself, well .............

Personally i'd be looking at the club if I had these issues or standing in front of the mirror thinking, hmmmm what a belter!

So this is more about their ability and the clothing is actually irrelevant. If they were togged out correctly and then were poor, had no etiquette and out of order in the 19th I could understand your concerns. At the end of the day, the onus is on the club and those who run it to ensure visitors and members get an equally good deal. It sounds like the owners are just chasing the cash and don't give a damn about the members
