Locals in the village of Newton Green here in Suffolk can play 9 holes of the course for free under the "common land" rule,http://www.club-noticeboard.co.uk/newtongreen/latestnews.php The course was originally 9 holes until they extended it to 18,if the locals want to play 18 the must pay to do so.Interestingly I was talking to a chap the other day who mentioned to me many golf courses in the UK have this "common Land" rule that enables the residents of the village to play free golf,he mentioned a club local to me that has a 60 year lease on it that locals can actually play for free and the club legally cant do a thing about it.Not good for the clubs this as membership seems to be on the decline at many golf clubs and the cost of running the place etc but does anybody else know of free golf on their local course? how great to walk to the course and play for free!
