I know golf clubs are struggling and will accept anybody to play their course nowdays but good grief letting some of these society day oiks on course is getting ridiculous. An assistant pro was telling me today at a club that I wont mention that the club that once had a four year waiting list now had society events where the oiks turned up in football shirts and all seemed to come from one county in particular which isnt too far from Suffolk ;) even though they werent allowed to play in their footie shirts the club still relaxed the clubs clothing rule so they could get some money in.Whats happened to the gentlemans game..........

Clubs need the money to survive

But I would suggest the society you are talking about is more rare than the actually norm

Most societies I have seen understand the dress codes etc with maybe the odd shirt not tucked in

My current club used to have a waiting list. Once this went the way of the dinosaurs, they started to let societies play, but only on Friday afternoons. Now they let them play anytime they want except weekends. Quite simply put, they have to let them play, else the course would become too expensive for the members and would close its doors... Sign of the times I'm afraid. Quite why it's happening, well we all have theories about that don't we, but this isn't the place to discuss them..;)

I would go with that. I work in a golf club that also has a Hotel. It has quite a lot of Residential groups and Societies playing, most wear the correct dress and are well behaved. Any of them that are improperly dressed are politely informed and by and large tend to purchase the appropriate clothing from the shop.

That's alright maybe they'll permanently relax the dress code for all, especially if some of the members point out that their membership fee and bar spend would be worth more to them than any one society ;)

Perhaps an argument needs to be made for getting the society fees in before the day (if they weren't already) and including a copy of any dress code in with any communication with societies. Maybe the club in question will or has reviewed it's policies.

or they could have done a deal on some clothing in the shop:whistle:.

If they are just after a "jolly" why dont they go to their local pitch and putt or crazy golf at Saaafend where they can wear their football shirts with pride.By all accounts they were struggling to get round a full course so why let them on?

Never mind, shivas irons, it must make a good topic for you and your chums to fulminate over as you sit in the clubhouse, blazered and tied, sipping your G&Ts and your brandies and soda. ;)

Large G&T for me and I'll join you to deplore the end of civilisation as we knew it.

Has anyone ever seen a society with players wearing football shirts? I have never seen it and I can't honestly believe it exists.

I certainly have not but the worst breach of dress standards I have ever seen was committed by a group of men who wear football shirts as part of their day job! Shirts not tucked in was the least of their offences.

Never seen it except on a golf course ( well that's pushing its description ) called Tilsworth which is basically a pay and hack

Just trying to see where you're coming from, are you surprised at the Club for their management of a club with a 4yr waiting list into something perceived as no better than a pitch & putt or the Society players for wearing footie tops?

Guessing, given the thread title, its the latter but maybe it should be the club who are viewed as the ones at fault here. Who was it that said if you build it they will come! :)

Good point. I suspect quite a few clubs have been forced into accepting societies as a way of keeping their head above water. And in some respects if they have got to this stage then beggars can't be choosers. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and you would kind of hoped that any half decently run club would be taking other measures before they are forced to have to let on football shirt wearing societies.

But then again my view is that if they are showing interest in the game, bringing in revenue and not driving buggies over the greens then who cares what they are wearing.
