Society oiks

Never mind, shivas irons, it must make a good topic for you and your chums to fulminate over as you sit in the clubhouse, blazered and tied, sipping your G&Ts and your brandies and soda. ;)
Large G&T for me and I'll join you to deplore the end of civilisation as we knew it.

Please join us

Oh dear, I seem to have been taken literally. I should have put in of those to signal irony -

Never seen it at my place but then again Grantham is not exactly the first place most people think about when planning a society day for the lads. In general I have no issues with societies at all, I am quite proud of the little club I play at and like the idea of more people having a chance to enjoy it. As I said in another thread, Lincolnshire probably only has one course that attracts people to play golf in the area so anything that spreads the word about the good but unheard of courses in the area has to be a benefit. So far all of the societies that I have seen treat the course and the club with respect and I have never heard of one not being welcome back again. That said, I have confidence in the staff at the club to address the issue on the spot should anyone not be dressed or acting appropriately.

Can`t say I have ever seen football shirts on a course , jeans yes , on pay and play courses , My former club Knighton Heath had a policy for society including dress codes , play was stableford format only , only 4 ball was foursomes or 4BBB and by agreement only , no medal play , handicap requirements are also relax as the worst case I know was a guy getting 1 point and that was on the 18th , but he had a good day and won a prize . Clubs need the extra income , some don't hence high subs but most need this extra income in green fees food over the bar and if they have a good day out its likely to bring more business , Private members clubs tend to have a day set aside for society golfers and this is nearly always Thursday ................................EYG

I know golf clubs are struggling and will accept anybody to play their course nowdays but good grief letting some of these society day oiks on course is getting ridiculous. An assistant pro was telling me today at a club that I wont mention that the club that once had a four year waiting list now had society events where the oiks turned up in football shirts and all seemed to come from one county in particular which isnt too far from Suffolk ;) even though they werent allowed to play in their footie shirts the club still relaxed the clubs clothing rule so they could get some money in.Whats happened to the gentlemans game..........

Shivas. You seem to be descending into the realms of snobbery!

Last year I played at a local Muni when my course was closed. I played the last 3 holes with 2 young lads that had caught up with me due to a 4 ball in front. They had on the usual Chav uniform of trainers, tracksuit bottoms tucked into black socks, jumpers and caps. Really enjoyed chatting to them TBH. They'd only just started playing and were keen as mustard. It never occurred to me that their money was less important than mine.. Every day's a school day eh?

Add to the fact they probably didn't know all the rules & etiquette of golf so surely some of these people deserve a break.

In fact most people new to the game probably wont know so if they all get the tone of response I think they will be getting its no wonder golf is struggling for players/members etc.

I dont think so, I think its right to preserve the gentlemans game that has always been played with decency and etiquette in this ever maddening world.
Golf lets the competitors keep their own score, its the only sport that does so, golfs different and lets keep it that way.As for the football shirts they turned up wearing them but were not allowed to wear them on course and were told this, so after they had a shower ;) and put on the appropriate attire they were wrongly allowed on the course.

So they put on the appropriate attire yet still "wrongly" allowed on the course ? Why was it wrong they were allowed on the course

Because they were oiks whatever they were wearing. Golf is a gentleman's game. Oiks, by definition, are not gentlemen.

There is an impeccable logic to outrageous snobbery.

A) They cant play golf
B) They had no etiquette
C) Off course manners were dire
D) They think they can turn up and play a quality course in a football shirt

I dont object to anybody playing golf at all, but if they are going to play a venue that a lot of people meticulously take care of they could at least learn the game, the rules, generally how to play golf, if they want to p**s about in there football shirts they can go down the local muni.

So for much for the EGU and golf clubs trying to make golf accessible to everyone

There is always the odd dinosaur with a snob attitude.

Gentlemen aren't snobs so you can't call yourself a gentleman

Anyone else you would look to see removed from the course ?

I suspect that every single one of us on here would be pretty miffed if we were behind a society outing which displayed these behaviours. I don't think any of these traits are acceptable on a golf course.

When the bookings are taken the co-ordinator should be pointed in the direction of the club website to familiarise themselves with the club dress code and then pass this information along. This has been the case with every society I have ever played in.

Normally your points are spot on but suspect you're on a bit of a wind up with this one. Would you like to be stuck behind a group like that?

If everyone was as open minded as you maybe the world would be a better place. Fair play to you man.
