Shouters

I find this whole post hysterical, the amount of folk getting worked up over a guy shouting "mashed potato" is comical and leads me to think some folk need to get out more. Is the guy causing any harm - no, is it against the rules - no, is he being immature - yes, has he got off his arse, paid the money for a ticket to go watch it instead of sitting in front of the box moaning - yes! Personally I'd rather have a thousand guys shouting mashed potato at an event, than 200 boring old farts sitting on deck chairs barely clapping at great golf. I suppose we're all entitled to an opinion, so in the mean time......................."TURNIP"

Just because you have paid to get in does not give you the right to behave badly or spoil the enjoyment of others. How long before they start shouting before impact. It happened to Justin Rose a few weeks ago. Euan Murray was quite vocal about it at weekend, raising the subject at least twice, saying it was a shame that an organisation like the PGA Tour that can raise billions for good causes can't stop this "disease" (his word). I have to say I agree.

I dont think its behaving badly or spoiling the enjoyment of others, the majority of the crowd were laughing you could quite clearly hear that on the TV. Where do you draw the line? Can you not shout Kuuuch or Luuuuke? I would hardly side on Ewen Murrays views either, the Telegraph doen a great piece during the Ryder Cup last year about how miserable he is.

I think its one of those things that is always going to split opinions and would say if guys want to shout something then so be it, as long as its not interfering with play. In the other hand if your beside him and he bellows in your ear, you are perfectly entitled to have a word with him if it has annoyed you..........the joys of free speech!

Shouting Luuuuke is clearly supportive of the player - and tends not to be shouted by individuals immediately following a shot being struck. Those berks who call out are not supporting the player - they are just trying to be noticed - and in doing so they are being disruptive.

As I said elsewhere in otehr contexts - relax rules and conventions - in this case of spectator behaviour - and let them get away with it and there lies chaos and anarchy. It's not necessary or supportive to the player and even if it annoys a minority of spectators and viewers (though I think it annoys the majority) then cut it out.

Its spoiling my enjoyment and I pay a lot for my Sky subscription. It also spoiled my enjoyment when I paid a small fortune to go to the US Open. I didn't hear anyone laughing, but if they did, hopefully the "joke" will soon become a bit thin. I am not holding my breath though. I would be delighted to see the shouters kicked out.

Quite amazing really. When I went to the US Open, your bags were searched, all cameras and phones confiscated before you even got on the bus. Yet no requirement for decent behaviour. The Marshalls even ignored in fighting in the crowd at one point (I am not joking). Makes you wonder.

Again, where do you draw the line? I remember Davis Love having someone kicked out for abusing a player, I think in the Ryder Cup. It's OK to abuse players at football matches, so is that where we want to go? Not me.

Agree 100% great post!

Like I said in my opening post I find it hysterical the amount of folk getting worked over the mashed potato guy!

chaos and anarchy Please tell me this is tongue and cheek? If not your time machine never worked, Hitler lost the war!

It also spoiled my enjoyment when I paid a small fortune to go to the US Open And really? You let something as trivial as a guy shouting mashed potato, ruin something that must have been a great experience! You must have been a right barrel of laughs on the flight home

I cant wait for the start of the PGA this weekend going to sit with my Orange Rickie Fowler hat, surround sound right up and enjoy the Mashed Potato man! :)

How do you get from someone shouting "mashed potato" to abusing players? Of course abuse of a player shouldn't be tolerated, but what has that got to do with anything?

If it bothers you that much you can either say something to the person shouting it, walk away, or if watching on TV, turn the sound down/off.

Talk about storm in a tea cup.

I didn't say it ruined my trip did I? Would have rather not had to endure Neanderthals shouting, not in support of the player, but to show their neanderthal mates they were the most "dumb assed" ? Absolutely. Would it stop me going again? No. Why? Because real golf fans go to watch the golf, not for the peripheral "entertainment" and to behave like a lout. Don't worry. I wouldn't expect you to understand.

I was asking where do you draw the line? Some say it happens in football so it should be ok in golf. Clearly you agree they are wrong.
I agree, say something or turn the sound down. All I am saying is I would rather have the sound up and not have to endure a race to the bottom of the gene pool. If they were supporting the player I would be a bit happier, but I can't remember the last time a ball actually did go "in the hole" on a 600 yard par 5 and I am not familiar with a player named mashed potato.

I don't think anyone is getting worked up. It's a discussion on a golf forum. People are contributing to the thread by expressing their opinion. That's all.

I just don't get it,what makes some one want to shot Mash Potato after a tee shot? & why is it funny? Genuine question

I think there is a difference between crowds cheering for their man (Luuuke or Kuuuch etc) and an individual making an inane comment just to be heard on TV. I watch a lot of coverage on TV and never see anyone laughing and sharing the joke as has been suggested.

Sounded like folk were laughing in the video posted. Not to say I agree with the shout, I find it deplorable and if I could get my hands on the guy I'd probably spank him one right in the fanny!

Come on now, it's not that every American in the crowd shouts 'Mashed Potato' or 'Get in the hole' It's not that they are all fat or 'over the top' either. Americans generally are a bit different from British, they tend to be more confident and classless, they are open and easy to talk to. We tend to be more class conscious and stuffy.

Just like any race you should not generalise or pigeon hole people, to do so is ignorent.

Ok Sweep you have expressed your opinion and I have expressed mine, how about we end it there with a dance.......
And for the record I do understand, I understand how to have a good time and not let some guy shouting for his buddys back home "spoil my entertainment" :p

Shouters are berks; they don't need to shout this stuff; they shout for their own benefit and not for the player; and they annoy the heck out of a lot of folk and also many players. The charge sheet seems pretty extensive to me and I can see only one verdict.

I think the learned council for the prosecution has made certain assumptions that are ill considered. If we analyse what Golf offers it's customer, it's USP must be entertainment. The customer attends a golfing tournament to be astounded by the skills of the competitors, they want to see the Golfing elette creating a performance that raises the pulse and fervour that leaves them exhilarated.

It would not be unexpected 'Ma Lord' if this fervor and asonishment should boil over into such exaltations to encourage the golf ball to 'Get into the hole' or indeed 'Mash Potato' it's self down the fairway.

Members of the Jury. I implore you to consider the facts and make a decision that looks at the comercial realisation of such events and not the blinkered view of conservatism.

I rest my case ;)
