Now normally people shouting GET IN THE HOLE ect doesn't really bother me BUT that guy following Tiger shouting BABA BOO would seriously receive one of my special straight right hands!!!

Surely Tiger must feel like saying ............ To them. Absolute idiots!!!!
What possesses some one to shout 'mash potato' after a tee shot? They should be shot on sight!

I concur lads, it really does my head in! Why do the security guys let them away with it? It must annoy the players? Only in America...

I went to the open last year at Lythm & I didn't hear one crazy outburst all day. Sums it up when they shout 'get in the hole' on a par5:o

As much as I agree it's pointless shouting get in the hole etc. they're fans and they've paid their money so get a bit of freedom. It happens at all sports, crowds shouting catch in cricket when a 6 is hit 10ft above their head. Or by 30000 fans when a centre back crosses the half way line and is implored to shoot.

Sorry mate but I disagree. It's a different sport completely. If you want to shout go to football,baseball......

So golf fans are better than football fans? That's hardly helping the image of what some golf members can be like? Anyways I'm sure if they players were really bothered things would change but just thinking of last years Ryder Cup makes me think they're cool with it.

At what point did I say golf fans were better than football fans??? I'm a football & golf fan. My point is when I go to a football match I expect to be shouting & singing for 90mins. When I go to watch golf I don't.
As for the Ryder cup, sure Poulter was cool with it,he's a big enough personality to deal with it & that's how he chose to deal with it. That's not to say other golfers would/or should have to.

If I mistook your point then for that I apologise, but I simply don't think paying fans should be told how to act, if they were shouting mid swing I'd agree. But vocal encouragement however it's done is in my book encouragement none the less. Ido t think that their should be a rule for how to support, be that footy, rugby, golf etc.

Cheers mate. We've all got different views on things.

Didn't see anyone mention better. Golf is a different sport with a different atmosphere. Nothing wrong with a little cheering etc but you have to remember that when someone shouts out something inane the 1st tee there could be a player elsewhere on the course in the middle of their swing. A bit of polite clapping would a lot less distracting than a full blown "MASHED POTATO". The fans following the big names about seem to show a total lack of respect for any other players when this shouting is happening. As for the Ryder cup. That is very different from normal comps where each player is an individual.

I can't remember which comp it was but I do remember watching a player mishit a shot due to shouts after big Phil sank a putt on a different area of the course.

To put an example into our game just think of the people who seem to think the immediate area around the clubhouse is soundproof. Don't know how many people it may have happened to but have you ever went to take a shot when someone shouts "What drink do you want" or gives a blast from the airline to clean their shoes? Under the rules we have to accept these distractions but a wee bit of courtesy and we wouldn't have to worry about them at all.

As for what the pros themselves think. I reckon GMac sums it up perfectly.

It happened this year to Garcia when the crowd whooped coz woods took his 3 wood out in the rough. Personally I think there is going to be noise on the course, I don't think what the noise is would have any bearing on how distracted I became. Hey it's only my opinion bit I think if a player who has swing a club countless thousands of times and has almost a robotic swing is really trying to blame noise then that's a cop out. In amateurs maybe not, but pros should be ok. Using other sports, I've never seen a snooker player miss a shot at the crucible and bar support from the other table, or a penalty missed coz its too noisy. I think the issue raised in the op was do we like it or not. As said before, I don't particularly like it, but feel everyone has the freedom to do as they wish. Unless told by authorities not too.

I read an article in a golf mag once about a Club that designates one comp day as a "sledging" comp.
In other words any kind of verbal offput goes at any point in the game.
Naturally it has to be done in the right spirit and you have to know your playing partners fairly well.
I quite fancy that.

The crazy sayings do my head but all for encouraging the players ie well played .....?? Your on it or go on my son etc etc
