I think it would be funny if some one shouted "get in the hole" after a snooker shot on the bbc. I would laugh my bag off. Or even better durring his stroke and seeing the cue go Into the felt

Thought so, see the cue rip the felt after a "get in the hole" shout would end me with laughter 😂

Nothing wrong with a little cheering etc but you have to remember that when someone shouts out something inane the 1st tee there could be a player elsewhere on the course in the middle of their swing. A bit of polite clapping would a lot less distracting than a full blown "MASHED POTATO". The fans following the big names about seem to show a total lack of respect for any other players when this shouting is happening. As for the Ryder cup. That is very different from normal comps where each player is an individual.

I can't remember which comp it was but I do remember watching a player mishit a shot due to shouts after big Phil sank a putt on a different area of the course.

To put an example into our game just think of the people who seem to think the immediate area around the clubhouse is soundproof. Don't know how many people it may have happened to but have you ever went to take a shot when someone shouts "What drink do you want" or gives a blast from the airline to clean their shoes? Under the rules we have to accept these distractions but a wee bit of courtesy and we wouldn't have to worry about them at all.

As for what the pros themselves think. I reckon GMac sums it up perfectly.

It seems to have turned into a race too, to be the first to shout so the shouts get closer and closer to impact.

The other thing is people trying to shake his hands mid round... He cant do it, he is at work and it makes him look bad that he has to walk past.
 
I hate this form of shouting out - for simple reason it has nothing to do with supporting the player - but everything to do with the individual thinking he is funny and getting himself noticed and heard on TV. So they should be told to 'shut it'. They are not provided players with what is generally recognised in golf as 'support' and 'encouragement'

The marshals should escort them out....
 
anyone caught doing this should be made to drive the Practice Range cart that collects the balls. The pros could then take out their revenge on them :)

On a serious note, surely some sort of punishment needs to be dished out. They need to make an example of these guys.
 
The times they are a changing, people's attitudes to sports and being spectators (and what that entitles them to) are changing.
We all talk about changing with the times and that golf needs to change it's image to attract more people/the next generation. Unfortunately a side effect of this relaxing of the "stuffy collared brigade" (the ones that fight hard to maintain tradition in the game - often at the lament of others that we need to move with the times, whatever that means), is that this kind of behaviour creeps in.
I don't like it, I don't agree with it and agree that the perpetrators should be removed forthwith, but this is the thing with moving with the times, you might not always like what the times are doing.

I also blame Happy Gilmore (I swear I heard one moron shout "go to your home ball" when Woods was putting on the 5th)...
 
I wonder what the people next to the shouters think having someone screaming out like that. Surly they get dirty looks at least....
 
The worst example of this I have ever heard came from the Solheim cup.

After one of the American Ladies hit her shot someone shouted 'get in the hole'
The same gentleman, I am assuming it was the same guy, shouted 'get in the bunker' after the European lady followed.

What a complete Jack a$$

Well I know what I'd say to them. And GriefinFife makes the good point. Golf has developed the way it has with it's apparently archaic and prosaic ways and converntions because these ways suited the nature of the game and those who played it. And they still do. And that is my biggest concern for the game. Relax conventions too far and you risk going past the tipping point without realising it. Once you relax things too far those new to the game will not understand why we do things the way we do - and that way lies chaos and anarchy.

Ask Eastern Europeans about their lives under dictators and today. From many you get strange wistful thoughts of how things were back then - not perfect by any means - but for many a heck of a lot better than now - now that democracy, capitalism and market forces are running amok. Be careful what you wish for. To go down the 'relaxation of conventions' route to get more people playing is not - I think - a most sensible approach if we wish to maintain the playing and enjoying of the game pretty much as it is today. Our conventions are core to the game. Applies for technology, dress etc as well as behaviour when watching golf.
 
There are plenty of marshals at these events but not sure the sponsors will want TV pictures of the fans being escorted by security or police so it is ignored and we all know that the PGA couldn't make a decision and act on any subject so no chance of them doing anything either. Sadly it will only continue to get worse and these people think they are being funny and getting on TV and until someone in charge either at an event or in general, grow a pair and do something then it won't be long before US golf has to be watched on mute

Might need the players to start asking for the halfwits to be ejected; might not make them popular initially but it would force the organisers to take a clear stance on the problem imo.
