I posted this last night on Twitter and got some interesting replies, so I thought I'd post it on here.

Is the 5 iron a long iron or a mid iron?

I happen to think long irons run from 2-4 with mid irons starting at 5 and running through to 7, with the 8-PW being short irons (.... And a wedge)

What do you think?

As its the longest iron in my bag, I class it as a long iron, although I am aware that to the men it is a mid iron.

it does depend on your personal setup i suppose, if 5 is your longest club, you would consider it a long iron. if you carry a 2 or a 3, then a 5 would be a mid iron. i class short irons from 9 up.

My bag:

4-5 long irons
6-8 mid irons
9-wedges short

I would say mid, but with so many on here with irons starting at 5, for some its the longest iron in their bag

Defo mid iron, as I can hit the 5 very well, but the 3 I struggled with and the 4 is hit or miss

it doesn't matter what you have in the bag or not. its possible to have 1-9 irons so 5 would HAVE to be a mid iron!

It's a long iron.

Long irons: 1-5
Mid irons: 6-8
short irons: 9-LW

Mid for me.

Surely it isn't labelled in relation to a personal bag set-up, it's our choice what we carry so shouldn't it be assigned as a mid iron if all irons are/were available.

As such,
1,2,3,4 = long irons
5,6,7,8 = mid irons
9,p/w plus other wedges = short irons

this is my idea of how they should look. I lump the 8i in with the short irons. in my head if I knock it down and only have an 8i left I view it as a short iron left. maybe due to the nike pro combos being bladed from 8-sw. half cavity 5-7. full cavity 2-4.

I agree with your categories Gareth.
Of the clubs I carry I only consider the 4iron a long iron, and that's debatable too in my mind.

It's the longest iron in my bag..... so it's a long iron for me.

With hybrids, rescues etc taking the place of traditional long irons and people loading their bag with extra wedges, I think the goal post has moved in regards what you would class as a long iron today.

5-6 long irons

7-8 mid irons

9-P + all gap and sand wedges = short

Good question though as now most people carry a couple of hybrids it could well ne the longest iron in their bag so they'd likely class it as a long iron!

I discount the 1 iron as i've never seen one.

My opinion:

2-4 - Long irons
5-7 - Mid irons
8-P - Short irons

I use 3-5 as long irons and 6-8 as mid irons but mainly because I dont like my 3 iron.
