I agree with you Gareth, though you haven't included a 1 iron.

1-4 are long
5-7 are mid
8-whatever is the most lofted wedge you can get (64*...?) are short

I don't carry a 3 iron (not through choice, but because my clubs came 4-PW and haven't found a 3 with the right shaft) but that doesn't make my 5 iron a long iron.

Mid iron and I agree with your classification.

However, since most people carry hybrids instead of long irons these days, I can see why people would think 5 is a long iron as it is the longest iron in their bag, they would be wrong though

For me my mid irons are 4,5,6 and short are 7 upward .. 1,2,3 irons are long but most peeps don't carry them .. If and when I replace a 5 iron with a hybrid that is when I will pack life in ( without golf what is there ?? ) or look for a short golf course.

I agree with the breakdown of 1-4, 5-7 and 8-W as the groupings. Just because someone doesn't carry a certain club it doesn't change the categories.

It's like saying because you drive a 1.2 Fiesta a 1.8 Focus is a big car :ears:

It's a 5 iron....

Why does it have to be classified?

But i'll play along...to me it's long (and hard to hit so i replaced with a "ladies club").

But then i have never hit a 3 iron or even seen a 2 iron. Others who have had some experience with those clubs would probably not consider a 5 to be a long iron.

Your all wrong... The 5 iron is a long iron.
How many people in here would be happy hitting into a green with a 5 iron compared to say a 6 iron. My 5 iron goes 185-190. That even for me is a long way out for a iron shot.... Do you not think??

I'd be a lot happier hitting into a green with my 5i than my 2i ;)

Traditionally it is a mid iron, to me it is a mid iron but with hybrids being made more and more popular (due to hackers being unable to hit long irons and manufacturers jumping on this fact), the 5 and sometimes 6 irons are being pushed into the long iron category which is plain wrong.

No it's not, whether you're happy hitting it is entirely irrelevant in this discussion, as is how far you hit it.

I have stated that to me they are long irons, but that's my opinion (rightly or wrongly, maybe even both).

But I looked up the Nike Pro Combo clubs to see how they are split and it appears they think of 3&4 being long, 5-7 being mid and 8 downwards being short irons as they are split this way for Pocket cavity, split cavity and blade.

1-4 long irons
5- 8 mid irons
9i upwards short irons.

I do not see how you can change the classification of an iron just because it is the longest in your bag. That is like saying a 12 degree driver has a low loft as that is the lowest that you can hit.

I'm a bit old school

1-3 long irons
4-7 mid irons
8 downwards short irons.

When someone says something like "Jack Nicklaus was a great long iron player" I don't think they are referring to his ability to hit a 5 iron.

5 iron is long all day long. Always has been. Back in the day when proper sets consisted of 9 irons, 3-5 were long irons, 6-8 were your mid and 9-SW were short irons.

Nothing has changed bar manufacturers making more money for less irons!

Damn, damn and double damn!

Once again I find myself agreeing with the mighty Craw... talks some sense does that lad.;)

Longest iron in my bag ...... but its a mid iron ....cos it has a 5 stamped on it and there's only nine of them numbered like that so a 5 has to be a mid!

All you peeps quoting 1 irons........... I've never seen a 1 iron and 2 irons are as rare as hens teeth. Most sets start at 4 iron now and if you want a 3 you have to pay extra.
