Surely the average Forum member hits the ball so long off the tee that a 5 iron isn't necessary it should be at most a 7 iron into the green ;)

I'd class them as mid irons :D

All you peeps quoting 1 irons........... I've never seen a 1 iron and 2 irons are as rare as hens teeth. Most sets start at 4 iron now and if you want a 3 you have to pay extra.

I used to carry a 1 iron. Wilson 1200 TR. Still till got it.

Makes me think of Crocodile Dundee. "That's not a long iron. That's a long iron..." :D

Great off the tee before hybrids. Trevino was wrong by the way, anyone can hit a 1 iron...off a tee. OK off the fairway too if the ball was sitting up.

5 iron is long all day long. Always has been. Back in the day when proper sets consisted of 9 irons, 3-5 were long irons, 6-8 were your mid and 9-SW were short irons.

Nothing has changed bar manufacturers making more money for less irons!

So what are 1&2 irons then? Back in the day they used to be available in pretty much most sets.

Although 5 is the longest iron in my bag as I then go to hybrids I still feel it is a mid iron. I feel I'm missing a 3 and 4 iron now but at the time hybrids were the right choice for me.
I think the way manufacturers sell clubs means that a 5 iron is now more widely considered a long iron.
To me it's still mid.

Long iron for me.

How often do you see 1 or 2 irons these days?

So, 3-4 and 5 long

6-7 and 8 mid

9 down to wedges short.

I find it hard to hit consistently - might replace with a fairway wood.

I do not think there really is a correct answer to this. Like has been said a lot of people do not carry anything lower than a 5i so them it is a long iron. I carry from 2i to LW (11 irons) so to me it is a mid iron.

If some players use rescue clubs because they can't hit a long iron, and the biggest iron in their bag is a 5, then it can't be a long iron ;)

some of the views I find funny -

I havnt seen a 1 iron therefore I am not including it even though I know full well it exists.

I don't have a 4 iron in the bag therefore a 5 iron is a long iron.

some people don't care 5 irons. does that then make a 6 iron, a long iron? now we are just getting silly!

As many have said, I see the 5 as a mid iron, with the 6 & 7, however it is the longest Iron I carry in the bag so I suppose in my set of clubs it's a long iron.

In my bag:
4-5 irons = long irons
6-7 irons = mid irons
8 - 9 = short irons
PW downwards I class as wedges, not short irons.

But that's just for my set up. There's surely no right or wrong here? Possibly convention "suggests" which they are, but that's different from right and wrong.
