Bringing our Rules/Code of Conduct up to date for Juniors at our Club.
Do you have any seperate instructions or clauses in your constitution?
ie, at what age can Juniors play the course unaccompanied?

Limitations on access to the Clubhouse?

Do you allow Juniors to enter Mens/Ladies Comps? Any restrictions?

What playing rights do Juniors have?

Any help or advice appreciatted.

might not be relevant for you, but after an incident at ours something called the Shanarri Protocol has been cited, which more or less means juniors can't be approached or spoken too by adults if they commit a misdemeanour.

2 answers. A previous club did not allow juniors to book tee times via BRS, they had to go through the pro, they were not allowed to enter comps until the Friday night before the Saturday, taking what times were left, they had to be accompanied by an adult when playing comps. They were not allowed in the snooker room.

The club I moved to, and another nearby is the same : Juniors have the same deal as adults, they can book via BRS, they can enter comps once they have an adult h/c in the same way an adult does, they do not need an adult in their group when playing comps. Neither club were daft enough to waste space on a snooker room so they had access to all areas. In effect they were the same as you or I.

Guess which clubs the teenagers all moved to once they hit around 14-15? (clue, it was not club 1. Club 1 is a traditional members club, clubs 2 & 3 are proprietary clubs)

The club may have already referred to it however...

Our home club, our son was allowed to play in main comps as soon as he had a 18 hole handicap(think he was probably aged 11 a a guess), and playing rights basically the same as an adult. Access to all areas.

Another local club that only he was member of, he could play in adult comps but juniors had to have at least one adult playing with them iirc. Again access all okay iirc. Another club say he cant play in comps until he was either 5 or 7 handicap iirc, again can access all areas. the other club he is a member of, don't know as we have never played a comp there, so never asked but can access all tee times and plays at peak times with us.

Not to sure about the others with comps, as I am a member at them and he isn't a member at them but had no problems signing him in as a guest at peak times when playing with me. One of those I am aware only allows junior to book tee times after midday or 1pm at the weekend and must have a handicap under 11ish(I think!) to enter adult comps when I asked originally.

Slightly all different but given how much you are paying for junior membership, pretty good access to areas and tee times and some offer free lessons/range time etc, generally junior golf is great imho.

hope that helps.

EDIT sometime access is restricted to junior and snooker tables thinking about it.

We have no restrictions in the playing sense; basically we don't have juniors - they are treated for access and competition entry exactly the same way as any other member.

I should add that there are no membership fees for members children (under 18) other than the union fees.

This is how golf should be . That would really grow the game. I’m not s member but if a club offered free kid memberships I’d defo join. Chance to father child bond with my kid / kids (hopefully) whilst playing the best sport and getting away from the wife? Where’s the catch?!

Edit just looked into my mini links membership , juniors £50 or free with and adult. Well £200 a year even more well spent , soon as she wants to get into golf she can join me down the mini links

Unfortunately it’s not that easy and there isn’t a one size fits all answer.

We’ve had free membership until this year and over the last 2 years lost virtually all our Juniors, this year on advice from England Golf and The Golf Foundation we’ve introduced a £50.00 fee, it comes with coaching, a club Polo, and a few other bits, we’ve had 21 kids join.
Unless a parent also played and encouraged the kid we found there was no commitment to the Club.

£50 sounds reasonable anyways and with all that thrown in thats a win

you need parents though. i enjoyed golf with my dad but not with people my own age until I was in my 20s

Any age restrictions to playing?
Confirmation back. No age restrictions at the moment. They are looking at bringing something in to cover themselves but with the aim of keeping it as open as it currently is. Parents with young kids, pre 12 for example, currently go out with them but there is nothing in the rules which says that must happen. They may bring something in to cover themselves in case one person starts to abuse that. The touch will be a light one though, the club is very good for inclusivity like that.

This is one area I’m concerned about, summer holidays, mum/dad drops 3 mates aged 8-10 at Golf Club and disappears for 4 hours, who is responsible for those kids.
Not saying anything is likely to happen, but want to make sure the Children and the Club are protected.

Juniors are allowed in to 'normal' competitions but there must be on adult in the group.

Our 'Junior' fees are on an increasing scale until the reach the age of 25 when they reach adult fees. The junior fees are a bit on the high side compared to the other large club nearby.

Not totally sure but I believe they get special rate coaching fees as a group and a certain amount of free range balls. Polo shirts are provided by a sponsor.

Absolutely no idea what it is at my new club but I belive there aren't any restrictions on when but I'd need check that.

At my old club when I was a junior and I belive rules are still the same, it was Juniors could play during the week unrestricted times during week provided no comps were on, they could only play after midday on weekends during summer and after 11am in winter. Were only allowed to play full mens comps if they had achieved a single figure handicap but had to be with adult members.

Fees no idea as my parents paid it, but there wasn't any coaching or anything else thrown in. Comps were free to enter though and free food was provided if you played in club matches

Juniors can't play before noon on a Tuesday, Saturday or Sunday unless they have a h/c of 15 or less

They can play in all of our major board competitions (I think they need a senior member to be in the playing group)

Access to the clubhouse is unrestricted

I think in general play they can play the course whenever they want except the times stated above

FYI - Our club champion has just turned 13 and is playing off of 1 h/c

When I was a junior we were confined to the snooker room, usually until members wanted a game when it was the locker room. We had to go to the back door of the kitchen to get a drink and any food as we weren't allowed in the bar area at any time. I trust times have moved on at all clubs since then. We also couldn't play until after 11.00, couldn't play in competitions unless we were off 18 or less

I don't understand all these restrictions that clubs place on juniors.

On the course, surely if they are good enough then they're old enough. Ridiculous if a junior has to be a single figure golfer to play in a comp against 28 handicapped adults.

In the clubhouse its frankly weird if you are restricting access, unless you want to protect them from the local paedophile ring who meet in the bar on a Tuesday, but if this is case you need to ask questions about the membership.
